[Poll #850991]

Edit: I should note that identical tiles are not realistic, since I've checked Home Depot and Rona and not found them yet. :(

Fill the one-inch gap between the new tiles and the carpet with a piece of hardwoord with a suitable stain.

I opted for identical tiles before I read the disclaimer so, assuming money is no object (who am I kidding?) I'd replace everything with either new tile or indoor/outdoor carpeting.

I'm gonna go with the hardwood option that the person above suggested - that's generally what people do when looking to fill a gap. Also, with the tiles - replace with the identical variety.

Burn it, hope to hell that I'm the insurance adjuster appointed to the claim, and all will be taken care of!

as I was submitting your poll, I read your edit. I would choose as a second guess to obtain a bigger cabinet.

Put in a transition. You can buy metal (brass/bronze/aluminum) ones if they work the the decor. You can buy/steal/make hardwood/laminate ones. And you can also get stone ones made - slate or granite or some such

(When you are looking for them, the key word is 'transition' - it is tough to find things if you don't know the language)

The key things to know when looking for them is the height difference between the two materials, the gap width and the type of materials

I have got a strip of 'harvest pine' laminate transition that would probably span an inch gap. I've got about a 5' length - how long is the gap?

No idea whether or not that'd work with your decor, but you can have it if it will work

The transition is a good idea.

Also: Bathrooms are vastly underrated. Unlike kitchens, there's really a limit on how extravagant you can go before you stop making your money back (unless you're building an ultra-luxury place) but nothing turns people off like seeing an ugly, dated bathroom. It's not even a conscious thing most of the time (unless the bathroom is really ugly and dated) but people really do notice bathrooms.

Kitchens are a no-brainer, of course. :-)

Another option with the missing tile might be to find something complementary and see if you can replace a couple other tiles with it as well. That way you can add a little interest to the room without making it obvious that you've tacked a random tile in to cover a hole. :-) But I'm no designer so you should probably not listen to me.

I know you're big on replacing the carpet, but I'm of the strong opinion that all carpets except for the persian kind are evil. This mostly comes from an apartment I used to live in with beige wall to wall carpets. It looked fine, but then one day my nervous kitten decided to start peeing in the corner. Over $100 worth of cleaning products and approximately 15 passes with a mini carpet shampooer later, lots of brown icky dirt was still coming out of that patch of carpet. It's a breeding ground for yuck.
So, how about laminate flooring? It's relatively inexpensive.

1. "Relatively inexpensive" has no meaning in this context. We'd be doing 1200 aquare feet. At Home Depot, the cheapest laminate they have (which looks like crap) is $0.99/sq.ft. + $2.45/sq.ft. for installation. It adds up.

2. Actually not big on replacing the carpet, except that it would look nice. The big price tag scares me.

Hey there -- thanks for the offer! We have three doorways to cover, so 5' won't be enough, but it would certainly be enough to try, and maybe we could match it. If the piece has any value to you at all, keep it, and we'll just go pick up the pieces we need, no biggie.

The height difference is almost nil actually, but both have an altitude of ~0.5" off the concrete. Possibly 0.25" for the carpet and 0.5" for the tile -- I haven't measured yet, but of course will do so.

We're far more likely to just run for Mexico. No burning.

I'll be back in town on Thursday and will bring down the transition stuff I have in the attic if you like - drop me an email then if you still might want it

Don't bother with the carpet -- most people will tear it out these days (the tacky will put down laminate "hardwood", which the next person will rip out, too). The kitchen is critical, and bathrooms add to resale value. Most people will personalize bedrooms anyway, so spending a lot of time there is wasted effort.

In our case, we bought a house with a dreadful kitchen, but everything else was great. That way we get the kitchen we want when we're willing to put in the time and money. But if the house had had a redone kitchen the house probably would have sold for lots more.
