Don't bother with the carpet -- most people will tear it out these days (the tacky will put down laminate "hardwood", which the next person will rip out, too). The kitchen is critical, and bathrooms add to resale value. Most people will personalize bedrooms anyway, so spending a lot of time there is wasted effort.

In our case, we bought a house with a dreadful kitchen, but everything else was great. That way we get the kitchen we want when we're willing to put in the time and money. But if the house had had a redone kitchen the house probably would have sold for lots more.
