Over 70% of Canadians are now considered equal under marriage law. But same-sex couples are still "less equal" in Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and Newfoundland & Labrador, along with the Yukon, Nunavut, and Northwest Territories.

I wonder how long it will take for equal rights to actually happen? Certainly Paul Martin and Stephen Harper aren't likely to be very helpful in this regard...

Too many "equal" people out there anyways, someone has to stomp it out before it spreads.

Guess he and Matt have had enough. Aren't you glad celebrities are on our side?

Affleck Slams Gay Marriage Opposition

Hollywood hunk Ben Affleck has slammed American President George W Bush's call to outlaw gay marriage. Thousands of same-sex couples - including TV personality Rosie O'Donnell and her longtime love Kelli Carpenter - have flocked to San Francisco, California, in recent weeks to tie the knot in defiance of Bush's ban. And Affleck, who recently enjoyed a same-sex smooch with comic actor Seth Meyers when they starred in a gay marriage skit on Saturday Night Live, has joined a growing list of celebrities who believe homosexuals should be allowed the right to wed. He says, "I don't think the government should be involved in any way in people's bedrooms or lives. With so much hatred and unpleasantness in the world, why would you wanna get in the way of people who love each other marrying each other? "Anybody who wants to be able to get married to anybody else should be able to. It's not my business."

They are still allowing the free vote in the spring when the courts finish the draft of the bill. We should at least be happy that they aren't enforcing a party vote via the whip.

We're also closer to having it than the US.

Well certainly it really means that all *pigs* are equal to each other, and other animals are simply... /less/ equal.

I'm not sure how I feel about free vote versus party-line vote. I don't like the idea of human rights being subjected to a popularity contest -- just because the majority likes something, does that make it okay? Just? Slavery and women voting and interracial marriage would still be distant if majority rule worked for human rights.

At the same time, I'm a fan of the idea of MP-level decisions, rather than the PMO / OLO.

*shrug*

What? We gave women the right to vote in this country? Was that before or after they were legally declared persons under the law?

Don't look at me, I didn't do it! Barefoot and pregnant, that's my motto.

Wouldn't Harper want to follow The Shrub?

Paul Martin would put the legislation to a free vote. However, there is strength in numbers and many would following the leader's vote. So in some sense it would be like a party-line vote, but with the handful of exceptions.

I thought the same thing when I saw Cam's post. But then I read the paper ... apparently the Quebec Court of Appeal ruled in favour of gay marriage just today. So, get yourself a bouquet, some rice, and a husband! Quick, before Stephen Harper becomes Prime Minister!

I am glad to say we're leaps and bounds ahead of the US, but it bothers me that there is no gay marriage in NB yet, since that is where I live.
I think I have some rose tinted glasses on when I view the world because I just don't get why this is even an issue and why everyone can't just get married.
I had a hard time when I was working for Safe Spaces, understanding why anyone would even care if a person is gay or bisexual or straight or anything. In my world, none of that matters.
