Not on track for Elite status next year. :-(

65 flight segments on Air Canada alone?! Either you're taking some awfully indirect routes (Halifax via Regina?), or...wow.

Indirect only a bit - most crazy routes would not be allowed, you'd be charged for multiple tickets. But there's no rule against flying to Calgary first, then Edmonton, as I'm doing this evening. :)

(Oops. That was me.)

If they use the same system for paid tickets as they do for tickets purchased with points, they allow you to route your trip through any one stop...so long as your route doesn't backtrack over itself. So...Toronto to Vancouver via Yellowknife would work. (But not via Montreal.)*

*At least, this is how I understand it after a nice woman from AC explained it all to me.

Not quite. Every city pair has acceptable and unacceptable routing options. Sometimes backtracking is OK (YHZ-YYZ-LHR is the most obvious example, but even domestic is OK sometimes), but other times it's not. Winnipeg to Toronto can go through Ottawa, but Edmonton to Toronto can't go through Vancouver.

Ah, that makes sense (especially since I've flown YFC-YYZ-LHR). Maybe you should moonlight for Air Canada. You probably know the system better than most employees. :-).

Oh no, I'm totally an amateur compared to the *real* frequent flyers (the ones who have completed 100k *miles* a couple months ago, for example).

Funny to think that I consider myself a pro flyer...and yet have never even hit the 25K mark on a single carrier in a year. :-).

That said, I'm in the middle of a 25K-in-6-weeks run. All but Hawaii on Star Alliance. But most of these tickets were purchased with miles so they don't count.

How many do you need for AC elite? Did AC do the double EQM bonus or anything like that?

WestJet doesn't have a FF program yet, so no EQM bonuses in Canada. Maybe in 2010 when WS starts theirs.

For Elite (StarAlliance Gold) you need only 35k, lower than most. Good deal. 50 segments though. I won't hit either this year without something dramatic changing.

wow, that really is low to get to gold, that's crazy! to get to gold on CO you need 50k, and plat (their highest level) is 75k

do you have to hit both the segments and miles, or just one?

Either one is fine. Note that SuperElite is 99k or 100 segments - big jump!

Oh no, that sucks! I'm just waiting for my flight from last week to post and I'll be Star Alliance Gold! Finally, I'll get the recognition I deserve :o)

I should post an update - I'm now on track due to an impulse trip to Tokyo in 2 weeks. Will hit my 35k miles requirement Sept 10th over northern Canada somewhere. Still won't get my major miles like last year, but as long as I maintain *G I'm happy!

I considered collecting miles on Aeroplan a while ago just for getting the status but decided against it in the end as AC miles are not that great value for someone living in the UK.

True - they're valid for use on all StarAlliance carriers of course, but earning and keeping your account in good standing is a bit trickier from your location.
