An Inconvenient Truth is a movie version of a presentation that former US Vice-President Al Gore has been making around the world for many years. The movie "offers a passionate and inspirational look at one man's fervent crusade to halt global warming's deadly progress in its tracks by exposing the myths and misconceptions that surround it."

Check out this 30-second clip: By the time you watch this video…

Some notes:
  • A rebuttal of the not-yet-released movie is already rushing around the internet, mainly promoted by right-wing websites. Think Progress has posted a rebuttal of the rebuttal.
  • 1995 was the hottest year on record until it was eclipsed by 1997 — then 1998, 2001, 2002, 2003 and 2004. (Seattle Times)
  • The top climate scientist at NASA says the Bush administration has tried to stop him from speaking out since he gave a lecture [in December] calling for prompt reductions in emissions of greenhouse gases linked to global warming. (NYTimes)
  • Trying to understand the confusion that some people have toward whether or not global warming is actually happening and is partly our fault, Naomi Oreskes read 928 papers published in scientific journals between 1993 and 2003 that had the keywords "climate change." They represented about 10% of the papers published on climate change ever. 75% agreed with the concept that global warming is occurring and is to some extent our fault, 25% dealt with scientific methods and had no position on the question, and 0% disagreed. (Science) Think about that for a moment. No studies between 1993 and 2003 said that global warming isn't mankind's fault. Despite the huge increases in evidence gathered between 2003 and 2006 not being a factor. How overwhelming must the concensus be, then?

I <3 the Westhampton, it's our local indie/lefty movie house. Shame Dan swallowed the Republican propaganda about Al Gore, I'd love to go see it.

Does Dan get to veto all your movie choices?

Alternately, is Dan unwilling to listen to a view he disagrees with?

No, it means I'll be going by myself, which is to say that I probably won't see it, since I don't like going to the movies unless it's a date type thing.

And no, he's not unwilling to listen to a view he disagrees with... he's probably against shelling out $14 for tickets to it. :-P

Wow, pricey. Most rep cinemas I've been to are much cheaper than that -- it will only cost me $7, *Canadian*. Come up here to see it!

$7 USD per ticket; and I'm willing to bet I'd lose out on the gas thing getting up there.

Alternately, perhaps he could read something about the issue that doesn't have Al Gore's name on it. There's even studies released during the Bush Administration that are pretty scary, if that's what he needs to hear.

It's not global warming, it's Al Gore.

Oh well. Not everybody likes everybody.

I think he'd check if Al Gore said the sky was blue... sadly, a lot of people here bought the right wing spin directed against him in 2000, so he's lost a lot of credibility.

It's a shame. I just hope that the current opinion polls have some meaning in 2008. Currently, only three US states have positive approval ratings of Bush, but I fully expect a Republican congress this year, and another Republican president in 2008.

I would like to see this movie. Someday I want to really find out a lot about this issue and make my way through the competing propoganda.

75% agreed with the concept that global warming is occurring, 25% dealt with scientific methods and had no position on the supposed question, and 0% disagreed. (Science) Think about that for a moment. No studies between 1993 and 2003 said that global warming isn't mankind's fault.

As I understand it (which is barely,) the "occurring" question if different from the "mankind's fault" question.

Sorry, I misphrased that. I meant to indicate the same question for both. But yes, they are two different things. And the overwhelming concensus is that mankind is partly responsible for global warming and environmental changes we're seeing.

Silly. Bush don't believe in that new-fangled science... not when there's money to be made!

The native peoples of the Arctic Circle are already suffering. :-\

If it follows the usual movie release pattern here (for films not starring mutants and boy wizards), we'll get it sometime in 2017.

Thanks for including Providence in your list. The Avon is right down the street from us, about a 10-15 minute walk. I suspected it would be coming here, and to the Avon specifically, but as of yet I'd been too lazy to look it up myself.

Aukland? We get beat out by Aukland?

Our theatre (singular) occasionally gets films you wouldn't expect. Thankfully we have a small (but vocal) progressive movie-going population. The university is good for something besides providing me with gainful employment.
