An Inconvenient Truth
May. 29th, 2006 09:49 amAn Inconvenient Truth is a movie version of a presentation that former US Vice-President Al Gore has been making around the world for many years. The movie "offers a passionate and inspirational look at one man's fervent crusade to halt global warming's deadly progress in its tracks by exposing the myths and misconceptions that surround it."

Some notes:
- A rebuttal of the not-yet-released movie is already rushing around the internet, mainly promoted by right-wing websites. Think Progress has posted a rebuttal of the rebuttal.
- 1995 was the hottest year on record until it was eclipsed by 1997 — then 1998, 2001, 2002, 2003 and 2004. (Seattle Times)
- The top climate scientist at NASA says the Bush administration has tried to stop him from speaking out since he gave a lecture [in December] calling for prompt reductions in emissions of greenhouse gases linked to global warming. (NYTimes)
- Trying to understand the confusion that some people have toward whether or not global warming is actually happening and is partly our fault, Naomi Oreskes read 928 papers published in scientific journals between 1993 and 2003 that had the keywords "climate change." They represented about 10% of the papers published on climate change ever. 75% agreed with the concept that global warming is occurring and is to some extent our fault, 25% dealt with scientific methods and had no position on the question, and 0% disagreed. (Science) Think about that for a moment. No studies between 1993 and 2003 said that global warming isn't mankind's fault. Despite the huge increases in evidence gathered between 2003 and 2006 not being a factor. How overwhelming must the concensus be, then?
