If Paul Martin or the Liberals remain in office, with their documented support for the GLBT community, at least when he fucks me up the ass, it won't be punishable by law.

Date: 2005-04-15 04:14 am (UTC)"Liberals" is such a bad word in US politics, it's surreal. Your liberals *do* have documented support for GLBT concerns -- the problem is, Democrats aren't your liberals. They just barely qualify as centre most of the time! :)
But if you reduce the viewing frame to merely Republican vs Democrat, which is often necessary in the US, then you must admit that the Democrats do have more of a ducmented support for GLBT issues than Republicans do. Yes, it wavers, and yes it's nothing close to actual capital-s Support, but it is there.

Date: 2005-04-15 05:19 am (UTC)A lot of the recent interference into civil rights was a knee-jerk reaction to 9/11, and they wisely set up the Patriot Act so that major parts of it would expire and require re-examination. I think it's being toned down.
I went to a school with very Liberal professors (in the U.S. sense). They made it quite clear that people were generally incompetent and we all needed a government-based organization to tell us how to think and behave. And, of course, they were qualified to be part of that elite group that hands out instructions for everyone else.
These days the Democrats don't have any issues; their entire operation has been reduced to blocking everything the Republicans do on general principle, and occasionally claiming that changes in bankruptcy or voters' registration laws discriminate against black people.
