Well, it's starting. I bought a wireless router. And I brought my work laptop home to make use of it while Vinny works on his Personal Finance course work. So here I am lying on the couch, the laptop on my lap, happily surfing away while Vinny tries to convince me that they don't really mean LAPtop.

Does this mean that my own laptop purchase is approaching? Yes. I want this one, which is on sale until Midnight Tonight. Hmmmm.

I just don't have the money right now, unfortunately. I feel guilty, actually, because some close friends gave us laptop money as a wedding gift, so if I take that, plus money I earned from dumping stuff on eBay, I have almost enough. But I also have debt, and really need to deal with that in case we move, AND we're planning to buy a house/condo in Kitchener or TOronto, wherever we end up, so we have even less flexibility.

I hope my friends don't mind that the money they gave us is going to a laptop someday, rather than now.

But let's be realistic. Would I have purchased a wireless router if I thought the laptop wasn't coming soon? :-)

don't really care how you use the money, as long as you enjoy how you use the money... So in other word, I guess pot or prostitution is in... ;) Or for that matter, sex toys... J/K...

Naah, lighting things on fire and then breathing them in still doesn't appeal. Paying for sex falls into the same category, although a naive innocent part of me wants to go meet some hustlers and try to help them get out of hustling if they want to.

And I'm NOT gonna spend that much money on sex toys. Again.

*wink*

(just kidding, I've never spent that much on sex toys.)

Sex toys are ridiculously expensive. At least, some are. With mainstream commodities, you can clearly see the quality rise as the price rises, usually. But with sex toys there's this weird disconnect, since kink and rarity seems to be the more important element... it's bizarre to see it in action. Especially when the item you want is too boring to be expensive! :)

Just window shopping in most cases. And you know what it's like --
research something extensively, and all of a sudden new technology
changes everything!

A friend of mine is going down to Dore Alley in SF next weekend and is going to pick some stuff up for me... ;) And I don't think that technology is going to change.

No way -- the bells, the whistles, the microchips, the enhanced holographic modulators? All different, I'm sure of it!

Oh wait, maybe that's Star Trek. Wrong livejournal post. Whoops! :)

cush.

write me if you need help setting up encryption and protection... else your router will be hacked by someone needing free wireless like me :)

Sadly, my work laptop is old, so I'm using WEP 128-bit to secure things right now. Not 100% tight, but decent.

The router has built-in MAC filtering, which I like. Once we get the new laptop, I'll probably limit use to that MAC address only, just to lock things up further...

Feel free to sugest things I should check, of course! :)

Wireless surfin - cool dude.

But no PowerMAc G4 in your future? What happened to those ambitions..

I, too, am thinking of picking up a PC laptop. I want to be able to use delphi at home.. but will keep my G4 for music, video, photos and the internet.

I need more options and less price. More open standards and open source, less single-mouse-button. :)

Hey cam, I'm not sure if you're just pulling my leg with your response or if you really didn't do your research before posting.. Less single-mouse button? Puh-lease. What does open-standards mean? There's no proprietary IO on them anymore. And most of the OS is open-source, from the browser, to the networking IO, to the kernel to the gcc compiler. Sorry to slag, but it just sounds like there's nothing to stand on with those points. As for price, ok that's fair. An iBook G4 with the same specs as the Averatek you posted is $100 more Canadian from Apple's Canadian website. (And those taking university courses would get it for less.. if you knew anyone.. hehe)

of course, I write this as the guy who's also picking up a PC laptop this month too. ;)

Mostly just taking the piss, hun. Price is the most important concern. And by my reckoning a $1199 Averatec is much cheaper than a $1449 iBook. Even with the education discount my friend gets it's still around $1400.

If the PowerBook price difference was that small, I'd go for it. But the iBook doesn't appeal as much, really. Plus, once other important consideration is that I currently have rather wide open access to a lot of software I use, and that door would close if I went with a Mac. Barrier to entry. :(
