I don't think I want them to be saved. I'm kinda Conservative in my approach to the airlines: leave them alone. Air Canada used to be a Crown corporation, and that was fine and dandy. But if the government wants them to be private, then it should let them be private. Air Canada has been screwing up, making poor management decisions, and wasting money, for *years*. If the feds step in and save them, they'll just keep doing it, like the last few times the government saved them.
Now if AC manages to rescue themselves, then that's fantastic. I really do like the fact that there's an international airline called "Air Canada," and that it's popular and high-quality (if not high-frills). I would miss that if they disappeared.
But CanJet, WestJet, JetsGo, and other charter players are all doing well and making smarter, smaller-scale decisions. I don't fear for my travelling life if AC disappears.
I think that they won't receive any (significant) government help, but many analysts are saying that they will undoubtedly be saved by other private interests.
I'm not sure what to think of the whole thing. I'm cynical, since if they do go under, I stand to loose a whole shit-load of aeroplan points, plus a voucher for free return airfare anywhere in the world, with a purchased matching ticket.
When I used to have to fly from Winnipeg to Fredericton it would take 4 hours with AC, Winnipeg-Toronto-Fredericton. With CA it was Winnipeg-Ottawa-Montreal-Halifax-Saint John-Oslo-Fredericton. Evil I tell you. Took 13 hours.
Yeah - but you'll also notice they were relatively profitable in the long run, without government bailouts - because they had to do that. Just like Westjet has to. But the most important thing is that their staff members were friendly and respectful - whereas Air Canada has a bunch of fucking useless, rude and stuck up employees.

Air Canada will probably be saved.

Maybe I should start planning trips.
