Ever wonder why Anime or Queer As Folk DVDs are so pricy? DVDs are regionally coded to prevent people from watching movies they legally purchased in a different part of the world. What I find interesting is that, officially, region 1 is Canada, the USA, and "US Territories." I wonder if Iraq and Afghanistan (and Syria and Iran and...) will eventually be yellow too.

What's funny is that for the rest of the world people will almost always buy a Multi-Zone player, and have televisions that play various standards, such as 525-line, 625-line, or NTSC/PAL colour. Only in NA is such a practice rare.

"Mona Lisa Smile" is just coming out in theatres here.
24 Season 3 is on hour five.

At least when we get American Idol, they air the results of America's Voting show immediately following the episode in which viewers are asked to vote. No suspense at all!

But it reinforces your point that regional coding is an economic requirement.. (well not really your point but whatever)
