Marketing Buzzwords 101

It's sick how certain words or ideas become in, and end up everywhere. Examples: "asteroid heading for Earth, will destroy everything" (Armageddon, Deep impact movies in same year), "chipotle" something (Subway, Burger King, Jungle Jim's, others...), and now hemmy (Ford, Dodge, Toyota, whatever truck companies).

Just caught the end of a commercial and I have discovered that "hemmy" is spelled HEMI. Perhaps it stands for something? Crazy. I vote that we start our own trend, such as "foom." I want McDonald's and Subway battling it out over who can introduce the first Foom Combo, and I want all SUVs to come with optional Foom. Plus I want a Ben Affleck/J-Lo movie about Foom History. Called "Foom Girl."

A bunch of us were sitting around remarking on the fact that although no one knew what a hemi was, we were all programmed to want one by this truck commercial. It is therefore a powerful commercial. I guess.

We found out (from one of the more... um... yeared... among us) that a hemi refers to the pistons in the engine having a hemispherical rather than flat top. This also makes clear (kinda) where "flat top" comes from, too. This is '50's technology, back when "muscle cars" needed to be "muscley" because they weighed ridiculous amounts and lurched from gas station to gas station destroying the planet. Or something. I hadn't had my 4th morning coffee by this point and my attention was kinda wandering.
