The Globe and Mail comments section on this article is astounding.
"About time they are getting rid of a Liberal crony." -> he was elected in 1990 while the Mulroney government was in power. "Now Harper will replace him with a Conservative crony." -> the position is elected by the House meaning the other three parties will ultimately decide who gets the job. "[harper right wing conspiracy talk]" -> he doesn't report to the PMO and they couldn't get rid of him if they wanted to.
Anyway I vote for "he qualifies for a nice pension and would rather be an advisor abroad."
