I can't believe it's been eight years already. I still remember pretty vividly the candlelight vigil that GALA held at UNB a couple weeks after his death. It was well-attended (for a GALA event) and quite moving.

I'm glad that sexuality is no longer such a big issue.

Note for [livejournal.com profile] skaughty: check out the attendance number on the Spectrum history page!

Somehow I don't think so... unless Rove changed parties without telling anyone. You know, like FOX keeps trying to convince people Hastert and Foley did...

I don't think the media would be treating this any differently if Foley was a woman or if the page was female. If the page had been of the legal age, then yes, the "gay angle" would probably get (more) blown out of proportion.

Nope. I'm still expecting a desperate attempt at something from Rove. I suspect either another stopped-at-the-last-minute terror scare, or possibly ... I'm not sure. Something else. I almost said "they catch bin Laden" but that's not actually useful for them, because it makes more people think that "the war on terra" is over.

Incorrect. The media is falling hook line and sinker for one thing: the idea that this story has anything to do with Mark Foley being gay. The Republicans are still trying desperately to say that they couldn't stop Foley because it would have been called gay-bashing, and the religious right is constantly calling this a gay issue, not a pedophilia / underage sex issue, and the media are not calling them on it.

Check the coverage of Clinton/Lewinsky or that teacher that screwed her high school student. While the age differences were identical, and in one case the underage aspect was also true, none of them had anything to say about straight grownups automatically going after children.

I know, isn't that nuts? Fox, AP, CNN -- they've all done it now.

Geez, I didn't know about AP. Weird times. We have always been at war with Eurasia...

You're probably right. I've been getting all my news about this from progressive sources. I should know better.

Yup. Fox has done it on three or four separate occasions too, so it's not just a one-time typo by one person.

I've been getting my blood pressure all up based on my sources. Grrr. Need to switch back to reading sites that are calmer.

25. interesting.. we had numbers ranging from 15 to 25-ish, right? also interesting to see that they're now holding meetings in a Sexuality Centre and have a library collection there!

Yeah, I recognize a lot of my books from that library. I'm glad they got them out of Ken's basement and somewhere where everybody can view them!

We had attendance from 5-15, with maybe 25 on our best nights, according to my often-faulty memory.

apparently my own faulty memory is more exaggerative than yours. the numbers you recall sound much more plausible.. :)

I bet your online dating profiles include exaggerated numbers too.

Ugh. I've been doing all I can to avoid reading or hearing too much about the Foley issue because I didn't think I would have the stomach for the inevitable accusations that gay men all target children. And, sure enough, the so-con commentary is even more ridiculous than I could have imagined.

"Homosexuals reproduce sexually by molesting children."

I mean, c'mon.

Is that how I'm supposed to be reproducing? No wonder it's not working.

I know -- I'm out of the loop too. It's clear that some of us are just not up on all the aspects of the gay agenda. We'll have to stop missing so many of the secret meetings.
