I'm getting a cell phone paid for by work. Wooo! Here we go again: morning phone calls, evening phone calls... *sigh* Such is the price of being a big shot. If only there was some money involved.

I get my choice of these phones: please help me choose!

The "slider" phones usually end up having quite a few problems.

Aw damn, I was thinking that sounded kinda nifty.

They are, for the first 3 months. Nokia and Samsung are probably the best choices in that bunch. (I've owned way too many cell phones)

Yeah, I hate flip phones, so I think the Nokia is going to win. It's a funny coincidence that just after I bought my current Nokia from Virgin Mobile, I saw that their next model up was that one and I wanted it.

Sometimes I think a camera would be fun though.

I'm the exact opposite, I love flip phones. But that's mostly because I never remember to lock the keys, and I would call everyone and their brother from my pocket.

One thing to remember about the camera phones is how crappy the picture quality actually is. To get a phone that takes high quality pictures, you definitely have to shell out the money. Even my Razr doesn't take the greatest pictures.

True. I have a digital camera for when I care enough about quality though, so this would just be for when I see something stupid that needs to be recorded for posterity. :)

Which one has the worst reception and shortest battery life?

Ha! But no, if I'm going to have a work-aware cell, it better be freakin' beautiful-sounding.

Okay, but make sure you opt for the stylish lead-lined carrying case.

Nokia 9300 .. Pay the few extra dollars and get one. There is no other choice! I have a Razor which I hate, Ken (the boyfriend, someone you'll need to meet the next trip here) has the Nokia, he never leaves home without it.

Not available from Bell, no dice.

Pretty much yeah. I hate flip phones, but the Nokia is cute. Problem is it doesn't do anything except be a phone, and I already have one of those. Stupid Bell can't use it for some reason.

Wow, those are your choices? I didn't thinke some of those were even still available from Bell like the A860.

You should take a look at HOFO and ask on the Bell forum:
http://www.howardforums.com/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=46

Nokias usually have good reps for strong signal. What is with that list, just what the company is willing to pay for or can you pick a more expensive one if you pay the difference? The Sanyo phones (2300/7300/7500) have been getting good feedback from users on Bell too.

Those are the four our provider (a private operation in Winnipeg) provides for $0 with new contract. I'd much rather go to Bell directly, but I guess we deal with them.

They must have some old stock since you can't actually buy some of those phones from Bell. I think the A860 is the one Jo has from work and we haven't been too impressed with it. The people on PhoneScoop don't appear to be either: http://www.phonescoop.com/phones/user_reviews.php?phone=676

Personally I would stay away from the A860 and the LG 325 which only leaves you two choices...

That site is a hoot! It's like going on the internet to find out what's better, Star Trek or Star Wars. Every rating of a phone is FIVESTARSA+++++OMGGREATPHONEWOOO or IWILLKILLNOKIAEMPLOYEESCHILDREN.

The LG 325 does have a bunch of complaints, and a bunch of people who think it's perfect. Weird. The Nokia 2125 (my likely choice) seems to be a bit more popular.

I wish I could just get Bell to use my damned Virgin Mobile phone, but they claim they can't. Seems unlikely, since VM is actually Bell anyway.

It is not that they can't, but won't. Virgin is just a virtual operator using Bell's network. Each CDMA phone has a unique serial # (ESN) and Bell has set up their systems and policies to only allow Bell brand ESNs on Bell accounts.

Even Solo Mobile which is fully owned by Bell cannot swap phones between Bell and Solo. They technically could if they wanted to, but with phone subsidies, they want to lock everyone into their own provider for hardware. ;-(

Yeah, I plan to visit the bell store and be a bit pushy, just to see what I can get.

I'd vote for one of the flip options...even after a year I'm still not used to my candy-bar model and end up trying to dial when it's locked, or accidentally hang up on people by hitting the "reject" button when pickig it up.

(Actually, I'd go with whatever model has a "reject" soft button to deny calls. There's nothing quite like the feeling of "rejecting" instead of "declining" someone when you're pissed of at them.)

I've always had open-faced models though, so I'm acutely aware of the calling-from-my-pocket issue, and am very good about that now. Mainly what I hate about flip phones is the antenna sticking up.

Nokia typically has the most robust phones. If you're forced to use it, everything else will drive you mad.
