Ottawa Senators Stanley Cup Playoff History

1903 - Ottawa Silver Seven defeat two different challengers.
1904 - Ottawa Silver Seven defeat four different challengers.
1905 - Ottawa Silver Seven defeat two different challengers.
1906 - Ottawa Silver Seven defeat two different challengers.
1909 - Ottawa Senators go unchallenged
1910 - Ottawa Senators defeat two different challengers.
1911- Ottawa Senators defeat two different challengers.
1920 - Ottawa Senators defeat the Seattle Metropolitans in two separate series.
1921 - Ottawa Senators defeat the Vancouver Millionaires in two separate series.
1923 - Ottawa Senators defeat two different challengers.
1927 - Ottawa Senators defeat the Boston Bruins.

In total, nine Stanley Cups. More than Boston. More than Chicago. More than New York. More than anybody except Montréal (24), Toronto (13), and Detroit (10). For the Leafs fans, it's now been 39 years since they won the Cup. 40 years before that was the last time Ottawa won, but Ottawa's only been in the league for 22 of the last 80 years. Hmmm.

Also, just in case anybody wants to claim that the old Ottawa team and the new Ottawa team can't be combined: why not? Your favourite team no longer has the same coach, players, GM, owner, arena, ice, skates, technology, broadcasting network, fans, and sometimes even city that it had when it began. How is this different?

1934-1992 - Ottawa had no NHL team.

1992-1996 - didn't make playoffs

1997 - lost in first round to Buffalo
1998 - lost in second round to Washington
1999 - lost in first round to Buffalo
2000 - lost in first round to Toronto
2001 - lost in first round to Toronto
2002 - lost in second round to Toronto
2003 - lost in third round to New Jersey
2004 - lost in first round to Toronto
2005 - no NHL season
2006 - so far, have beaten 2004 Stanley Cup champs Tampa Bay in first round.

Please keep your fingers crossed.

The only nitpick is that they have only won a few of those since the formation of the league, the rest predate. The same reason 23 of Montreal's 24 championships "count". Apart from that I don't personally have any issue with combining the two teams, and we all know how important my opinion is.

In Colby Cosh's blog (www.colbycosh.com wouldn't you know), he made fun of Chris Chelios recently by saying he started out playing rover for the Silver Seven :).

Sweet.

Yeah, using the NHL formation date as a limiter at least gives consistency. Considering teams were often challenged multiple times in one year in the old days.

But unfortunately, using the NHL formation date prevents the Senators from being team number four on the Cup list, so I veto it. :)

I find the fact that Seattle had a team called The Metropolitans in 1920 tres drole. Seattle will barely be a metropolis in 2020. :-p.

So, out of the nine post-steason, they lost four to the Leafs.

Just pointing it out.

And no, I'm not a big hockey fan. :P

You should know that this post comes up as the second result for "ottawa senators" on google.ca's BlogSearch. I thought that it looked familiar. Check quick before it changes!
