I wish I had a magic wand. Luckily, the little punish-the-cats spray bottle is doing nicely at making the stucco just peel away from the ceiling -- it's radical!

Another couple hours and the entire kitchen ceiling should be roughly flat. Sadly it's bare concrete, so I will have to then plaster it smooth again in a few places. But shouldn't be too too bad. I hope.

Better than the stucco, that's for sure.

UPDATE: Done! The ceiling is now sorta flat and sorta bare. Soooo much easier than the scraping I tried in October.

wow!

I really can't wait to see this place! It sounds fantastic, and getting better all the time!

So *that*'s how to destucco a ceiling.

Apparently, not all stucco ceilings. This area of the condo was never painted, we think, meaning that moisture makes the stucco go back to its comfort zone of sticky plaster. If it were thick and painted, it's entirely possible this wouldn't work or would be more painful.

My father's advice: "I've heard it's easier to lay a new layer of drywall on the ceiling than it is to de-stucco. And drywall's a pain."

What compels someone to stucco a ceiling in the first place is what baffles the living daylights out of me.

It's going to be a disaster when you're here. Come back again in the fall, and it'll look much nicer.

My next aspiration is the master bath.

It better not be a disaster when we get there...I expect high class and ultimate luxury. :)

It's probably easier than plastering. They just spray the stuff on, don't they?

It's going to be even more of a disaster when you're here. Pete and Dorian will be here for painting. You and Shannon will be here for cabinet replacing, sink installing and counter putting.

I believe there are two types, but yes. The spray-on stuff, not painted, looks horrible and falls off the ceiling in the breeze or when touched. I'm glad to be rid of it.
