You know how everyone, probably including you, makes fun of those renovation shows like Trading Spaces: the horrid designs they come up with, the shocked faces when they reveal what's been done, and how the designers are mostly just putting themselves onto the space, not the actual owner? As much as we complain, they really usually do have the best intentions and don't do anything too ungodly (except for Hildy's eggs in a vase).

But tonight I saw the show that really *does* intend evil. Restaurant Makeover, which sounded kinda cool. They took a neighbourhood diner with inches of grease on everything and a cockroach nest in the wall, and rather than clean it up, spice it up, and leave it a few notches above where it was, they tore out everything that gave the place character, put in a new floor, and then insulted the diner's cook. For half an hour.

We didn't even watch the end, since they previewed the reveal with the owner saying (in a shocked, sad tone) "It's so chi-chi in here!" Then the designer saying (in a I'm better than she is tone) "her reaction was *so* disappointing."

Sadly, Grapefruit Moon is going to go out of business, since the customers that like eating in a greasy spoon *like* eating in a greasy spoon.

Update: From an online posting about the restaurant...
I have just watched an episode of Restaurant Makeover on the Food Network featuring the Grapefruit Moon venue...if Sandy is still in charge YOU COULD NOT PAY ME TO EAT THERE! When the team began the reno they found a collapsing sub floor, filthy broken tiles in the kitchen. These tiles were laid in a skanky mosiac pattern on the rotting floor, mountains of dirty grease and unidentifiable old food and a huge nests of cockroaches IN one of the counters...to sum up grease, filth, gross, insects, bleg!!!
After the makeover the owner was ungrateful and seemed not to grasp the GROSS FILTH that had been her business...ewwwwwwwwwwww.
Or, maybe she did grasp how dirty her restaurant could get as she painted over the freshly cleaned and painted linen colored walls in black. Perhaps to hide the fact that cleaning falls WAY down on the list of priorities at that "restaurant". UNBELIEVABLE!
From the review posted on the breakfast foods on the floor, sounds like Sandy is taking the Moon right on back to pre makeover standards...

Oh, God, please don't let this show come to Food Network US.

(Then, again, we're stuck with Sandra Lee, so I guess that balances things out.)

BTW, if you don't me asking off topically... can I be re-friended? ;-)
