Taxes filed. Even was able to get an access code for netfile for [livejournal.com profile] leapfish over the Internet, which was unheard of back in the day. I remember when I got a code and a friend didn't, and it was just tough shit because they were only letting a small test group try out the system. Now they'd let pets file as long as they promised to use the Internet.

I wonder how long til the refunds appear in our accounts? It's pretty early in the season, we might get lucky on this.

Legally, you have to file jointly. But when you NetFile, a separate file is created for each spouse, and you do file for each person.

We've been filing jointly for years -- common law spouses (one year of cohabitation) legally must file jointly.

What do you mean legally you have to file jointly? If you are married you just need to add some info from your spouse's tax return as well but you can each write up your own forms and mail them in seperately.

Is that with Quicktax? Its so much easier to do one form per couple in Quicktax so it figures out the best place to claim stuff. I hope it works the same as you are talking about where it does the form together but still lets you each submit your own.

We use www.ufile.ca -- rocks my socks.

I mean that legally, you cannot pretend to be single, either when married or common-law. Yes, you can do separate forms. Ufile does it in a single setup, then when filing generates the two files for you, very easy.

We just finished our returns with QuickTax and same thing, it saves 2 separate files so we are ok. Johanne is ticked that she owes money somehow this year but I am getting a huge amount of $$ back so me very happy.

We are going to put a little towards getting a new digital camcorder for the arrival of the baby, but the rest we are going to be good and pay down our mortgage. If we can keep the same rate up as this past year we should have it payed off in 9 years!!! Woohoo!

Nice! Our mortgage is 20 years, but with accelerated weekly payments we will have it paid off in November of 2021 if we just keep the same rates (which of course won't happen). But I suspect we'll make some extra payments ourselves one of these days. Equity = Fun!

Ours was originally 25, but with accelerated payments it would actually be around 21 years. Then we decided that if we could live without the extra cash for the first half of the year when they deduct for CCP/EI, then we could also live without it for the second half when they stop deducting and put that on as extra payments. That along with putting some money from our tax refund turns a 21 year mortgage into a 10 year one.

I knew making extra payments early made a big difference but I didn't think it would make THAT much of a difference.
