I cut myself. On a freakin tin can lid. But no, just a regular cut wasn't enough for me. I had to cut about half a centimetre down starting at the tip of my thumb, as if to create a forked thumb. So now I've got a big gusher of a gash, which may require stitches. I've bandaged it up as tight as I could, and I'm leaving it alone for now. Mostly because if I went to ER I'd just have to sit for a few hours anyway, it being very non-life-threatening. I'm hoping it will be better in the morning, but I don't really know what to expect. Argh. I have to teach tomorrow too, so I can't just blow off work for a doctor.

Ow ow ow ow ow.

Ummmmmm...hmmmm....that sucks. I took a big chunk out of my thumb with a beer bottle cap about six months ago, and it was bleeding forever too. What I'd suggest - it looks lame, but bandage the sucker up good (I'd use gauze pads and medical tape if I were you), and wrap the tape around tightly as if to seal it shut. I'd also consider buying some latex fingercots to put over your thumb, to prevent water and stuff from getting in there and making the bandage loose. If it's still bleeding though - put ice on the wound, as it'll cause the blood to clot and slow down the bleeding. Change the bandages whenever they need it - and as soon as the cut is at least not bleeding anymore, apply polysporin to speed up the healing and disinfect the wound.

it's taped up and on ice, and I hope it's down to manageable-cut size by morning. I'm afraid to change the bandage until then because tugging off the bandage will break open the length of it again. Ow.

That's what the latex fingercots are for - so you don't have to change it when you wash your hands or shower or do dishes, etc...

I don't know what those are, nor where to get them.

The look like tiny condoms - you can buy them at the drugstore. (Be sure to use any leftovers for small penis jokes.)

They are like little condoms that you put over your fingers to keep water and dirt from getting into the bandage. You can buy them at any drug store - in the first aid section.
