Dear [livejournal.com profile] get_busy_living,

Americans in control of international standards, throughout history, have focused primarily on American interests ans simplicity for Americans, leaving other nations to adapt and or suffer. As much as I'd like to blame the US government for this, it's really attributable to the gradual evolution of the airport code system:

They're easier once you ignore the Y: YYC is Calgary, YHZ is Halifax, YHM is Hamilton. Well OK, not easier. But at least there are letters in common. Sometimes more than one!

Signed, Cam

I was told by my ex (who was a flaming airline geek) that the "Y" codes in Canada started out as railroad codes...

Regarding ORD (O'Hare in Chicago, which used to be Orchard Field) - there is a high-end mall called Old Orchard in Chicago, which has nothing to do with Orchard Field. The developer was given the name by Mrs. Marshall Field, who said her father couldn't remember her fiance's name and called him "Orchard" instead of "Field."

Hey, it's late - the useless data just comes flowing out like guacamole from a thin tortilla...
