  • To those who celebrate the birth of Christ, rejoice!
  • To those who celebrate the visitation of Sinter Klaas (aka Saint Nicholas), I hope he brings you all sorts of loot (and even more for the poor downtrodden and lonely)!
  • To those who celebrate the eight night miracle of Channukah, may it bring peace and happiness to you!
  • To those who celebrate the unity and heritage of Kwanzaa, have a great week!
  • To those who observe fasting and prayer in the month of Ramadan, can you provide a good link that teaches me more about the Islamic calendar, and why Ramadan was in October this year? I hope it was cleansing and meaningful for you!
  • To those who celebrate the Winter Solstice... you missed it, go back a couple days! But I hope it was good for you.
  • To those who celebrate St Lucia Day -- that's neat, I'd never heard of it until this morning! Bring me a "Lucia Cat" to eat!
  • To those who just like the whole time off thing, I hope you find yourself relaxed and content.

[livejournal.com profile] leapfish and I will be hitting the road in the inevitable storm in about seven hours. Our path:

We will have Internet access in a couple places, but not everywhere. We will have the power inverter and the laptop in the car, so possibly if there are any open networks along the 401 or autoroute 20 you could see a hello. :-)

Mostly I'm just not getting any work done, and wanted to tell you all to have a happy holiday season, in whatever form that season takes for you. It's a natural human condition to celebrate changes in seasons, and so almost every society and country and religion celebrates near the end of the year. Don't get bogged down in what capitalism tells you to be doing, and don't get bogged down in avoiding what capitalism is telling you to be doing! Go give somebody a hug, or donate some food and time to those who need it. Whatever, it's your holiday. :)

*hug*

Shit! You're leaving?

If we go by the insane storm, it could be in the post office sorting centre that we can see one block from the condo, and it won't be getting out! But I'll keep my fingers crossed.

Regretfully, nothing arrived in time. But that means we get fun mail in 2005!

Ain't no such thing in the week before Christmas, and when crossing the border...

Have a Merry Christmas, and don't forget to give us a call if you are going to be in Ottawa for New Years so we can try and hook up for dinner before the parties start.

We will be in Ottawa for New Years (not Barry's Bay, as my low quality map appears to indicate). Dinner sounds like fun! Email me your contact info just in case I've lost it (gotta get a new(old) palm!)

Is the Lucia Cat made of chocolate, or cat?

From: [identity profile] c9.livejournal.com
Neither, it's like a sticky bun or something.

It's also Swedish, not St Lucian, as I expected.

Yikes, I did! I could have sworn I had Channukah. Oops! I shall remedy that immediately.

That's because Cam hates Jews. It's a little secret we try to keep from everyone, but I guess it's out now.

I think it started when we all went to see that Mel Gibson movie.

Have a good trip. Do report in on where hotspots along the 401 are.
Hopefully you get a decent car.. a land yatch doesn't seem so bad in a storm, eh?

Season's Greetings!

Oldsmobile Alero. Heavy enough to be safer, but small enough to not guzzle gas too terribly. They almost gave me an SUV, but those have a mileage cap, so they would have cost a bundle more.

Ummmm.....

If you can't get further than Ottawa and you're desperate for a place to stay, I've got a sofa bed in the family room I can pull out.

Seriously.

I don't know what things are like between K-W and Ottawa, but I question if you'll make it past Ottawa. Especially if this all freezes. Which it is supposed to. Any second now.

Sorry, I'm probably not helping that 'worry' mood.

Yeah, and if you can't make it all the way into the heart of Ottawa, you can stay at our place which is on the outskirts. ;)

I made it into work this morning, the last km or so was solid ice. The guy who shares offices with me, started to head out, but then returned when he found his steering and brakes did not work. Of course this is the same guy who has a Mustang for a "winter" car without snow tires and rear-wheel drive.

Drive was easy -- the storm stopped in Kitchener at lunch, so we had sunshine all the way. That doesn't mean that Boxing Day and later will be all that great, but hey. We made it part way, so that's good.

The first time I ever went to Canada was in April of '94, right after the infamous "Just Desserts" robbery/murder. I got the impression that they didn't sell a lot of Kwanzaa cards in the Carlton store at Eaton Centre...

My time off has been marred by the lack of a back-up for one of my job duties, so every morning for twenty minutes I have to log on to the piece-o-crap laptop they gave me to work from home (it's so old the punch card reader jams after five or six cards).

Have a safe trip (which you'll already have been doing when you read this), and have a happy holiday of whatever sort you feel like celebrating when you get there.
