It's a reference to a British novel called 'The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.' 42 is the answer to the question of Life, The Universe, and Everything. The joke is that everybody always talks about questioning the meaning of life, but nobody ever figures out what the actual question is before they want the answer!
Sadly, searching on "miserable failure" now has Michael Moore as the top hit. Methinks the neocons are fighting back!
