Lunch

I had lunch with said coworker today. He feels very strongly that it would be unfair and dishonest to just pretend that he was onside in this issue, but wanted very much to assure me that he does not think less of me, in fact he thinks more of me in many ways. But I will not change his mind. He is, to use his words, a total "Jesus freak" -- born-again, the Bible is complete and utter truth, etc. I'm trying hard not to judge him on this, because they are so far from my experience and beliefs. Basically, he believes the only way to make life better is to follow his faith, and to attempt to make the world better by steering it in that direction as well.

I feel much better now, not because I agree with his position (though I am fairly comfortable with leaving things mostly alone now), but because we talked and know each other's status. It saddens me a bit, but a) I feel I can remain friends, and b) I know that the barrier isn't homophobia or specific to marriage as much as it is uber-religious intolerance of anything non-Bible. It's weird (to me), but that's his ballgame so whatever.

It's hard to really describe properly, the conversation took an hour but I can't type it all in. Suffice to say that I'll be friendly and friends with him, though he won't be showing up at any Egale Canada galas!! :-)
