c9: (Lucky on my Lap)
[personal profile] c9
I wonder if I use the various social media similarly or differently from most. (I don't care about "correctly" - services like these should modify to match users' preferred activities, not vice versa)

I use Twitter for micro-blogging (@c_9), LiveJournal for larger-size blogging (but less these days, since Twitter sucks up the tiny post oxygen), Facebook for posting photos and staying connected with family/friends/colleagues, and a super-small email list for some of my closest friends.

I keep Twitter and LiveJournal quasi-anonymous: very few details and real personal data. In theory only people who know me would know who I am. Plus Google of course. This is foolish of course, as links between sites and user icons totally give the game away. But it's a small fence at least.

Facebook is not anonymous, but I have my privacy settings turned up to maximum, and also have work colleagues (current and former) on a filter in case of drunk posting or inappropriate friend behaviour. Never needed it yet, but again it's a small fence just in case. I have some work colleagues on Twitter, so they see a more raw "me" sometimes. If I ever work somewhere else, I'll definitely need to rationalize all this since just about any other workplace would be more formal.

(see if you're visible on Facebook to strangers! log out of Facebook, then click this link and edit the search box: http://www.google.com/search?q=site%3Afacebook.com+your+name+in+quotes . Also, use this page to test all your privacy settings in one step: http://www.reclaimprivacy.org/facebook )

This all comes to mind because I sent an email to a group of seven friends this morning, but after sending I realized that I could have put it anywhere (except Twitter - too long). Some web-heads have sites and RSS feeds and all that jazz, but I haven't put any effort into that because it's never seemed worth it. But some sort of magical "tell everyone about this thing, as appropriate" script would be nice. When's that mind-reading device being released, Google?

Addendum: MySpace no, LinkedIn yes but don't do anything with it, Flickr no, Yammer yes but not impressed yet, all those hundreds of others listed on some sites nononononono.
