How odd -- [profile] leapfish and I are having some friends over tomorrow for a monthly movie night.*  To prepare, lots of grocery shopping. Also, some beer purchasing. And I got carded! I must be dressed like a young punk today. I can't understand why I'd be carded in daylight.

* we're stealing [profile] iambic_cub's gang's AFI Top 100 idea, with a variation: we combined the list with the IMDb Top 100, then removed all movies after 2000 and before 1940, and then removed all movies that are part of a series or have sequels, and then finally gave everyone two vetoes to remove movies they hated. This left us with 78 movies (download the XLS). Tonight we're starting with the fantastic North by Northwest.

You are very youthful. :-) I'd card you just to find out where you lived. :-P

Ha! Good thing I use a fake address whenever The Man is concerned.

Cool listing of films, by the way.

Thanks. I wanted something a little less obscure than the AFI Top 100, otherwise our friends wouldn't really get into it. I think this one has a nice mix.

Really, it's just an excuse to get together that doesn't involve Survivor, which was our previous reason. We're just sick of Survivor now, so this lets us feel better about getting together to look at a TV. :)

North By Northwest, truly a classic.

What's wrong with movies made before 1940?

Well, nothing in principle. When hosting movie nights for 12 people, you have to have a list of movies that are relatively easy to locate and rent, and that at least a few in the group would be interested in viewing.

You do know you're going to miss out on some revolutionary movies that were pre-1940, eh?

It Happened One Night
The Wizard of Oz
Gone with the Wind
The Adventures of Robinhood
Mutiny on the Bounty

(I checked, they're all top-250 on IMDB)

You're being ageist. :P

I'm not being ageist, I'm being practical. The year filter was just a way to reduce the list to something more reasonable in size -- count up how many movies are AFI Top 100 pre-1940. Additionally, since we're only getting together monthly, those movies wouldn't have been chosen (with the possible exception of Oz) for several years. I suspect this movie night thing will only last a year or so anyway.

BTW, I studied film, and am not personally worried about never seeing those movies again.

A year??? But you need 6.5 to get through your subset of the AFI.

Yes. I also have a calculator. :)

I'm just guessing that we'll end up getting bored and switching to some other activity, that's all.
