[livejournal.com profile] simplisticton gave me a copy of the new (to me) Battlestar Galactica series. It is so awesome. I really regret not catching it from the beginning. Though one nice thing is that I'm not dealing with any commercials.

The Great
  • Atmosphere: the cinematography, the music
  • Scripts: Several characters were believeable from day one, which is rare. There's a few that are still caricatures, but less and less so.

The Awful
  • The use of "frak" everytime a character would normally say "fuck." Very distracting.

The Funny
  • The fact that they use obsolete technology and pray to COBOLKobol.

You know the deal with Kobol, right? As in, the derivation of the word and name and stuff?

Oh yeah, Wikipedia has been very informative.

I think it would be funny if someone discovered that the Scientology people and the Mormons have been praying to the same planet or aliens. Would mess with their heads. :-P

guessing you never saw Red Dwarf with it's "Smeg!" or Farscape with "Frel!" which helped make the "Frak!" thing less distracting.

RD was all British though, so they said all sorts of made up words, like lorry, bangers, and only gay in the village.

true, although they did go on record that "Smeg!" was actually made up so they could use a non-swear swear-word. I can't think of an earlier example.

Ace saying 'Gordon Bennett' in Doctor Who. Although Cable's use of 'flonq' in comics is early 90's.

I'm not familiar with 'flonq' unfortunately.

And I'd like to try to forget about Ace, I'm not sure if it was the enforced "character issues" or the actress' horrible acting, but she really stunk up the late 80s.

I am kind of embarrassed to admit it, but I love BG. Been watching it using bittorrent, because Space in Canada seems to think that they can wait half a year or more to air episodes after they've aired in the U.S.

BTW, in case you haven't seen it yet, the finale of the second season is awesome.

Not there yet -- on episode three of season two. I'll get there eventually. :)

Yeah, I actually waited for Space on season 2, but don't think I will be able to do it for season 3.

You're welcome :-)

Did you manage to find a copy of the miniseries somewhere?

On the Sci-Fi channel website, there are downloadable commentary tracks to go with every episode from episode 9 season 1 onward. Some of them are awesome because Ron Moore (creator, producer, etc.) rails on the Star Trek universe and writing a lot -- not because he didn't like it, but because he's just happy to be out of the straightjacket of writing for a series with such an established mythos/technology/style. I would love to see what he would have been able to do with ST:TNG if he'd had a free hand.

Yeah, he talks about a lot of that in his blog too.

I found a torrent with all of season 1 including the miniseries, so I grabed that.
