Friday: got a rental car, then cat food, then beer, McDonald's, [livejournal.com profile] benjidacruick, and hit the road for the two hour drive to Wasaga Beach. My parents are at our cottages in PEI, so we treated their house like a cottage of our own.

Saturday: showed Ben the amazing sights of the beach, the mountains, and the Starbucks. Well maybe it was just we wanted Starbucks. I'm not entirely sure I like the Wasaga Beach me: I drive 20km round trip for a frappucino. I combine this with other errands to slough off the guilt. We also barbequed homemade burgers from [livejournal.com profile] leapfish (oh so good), barbequed corn, shrimp, and zucchini (also oh so good), and hit the actual beach to test the water with some wading.

Sunday: Starbucks again (oh hush) and then driving around to try and find some quality mini-golf. One place had 36 holes in two courses, but we seemed to choose the boring, easy, single-elevation one. Jill (friend from high school) and Joe (her partner) and Tori (their daughter) and Shopie (their dog) showed up around then and we all ended up back at my parents' place. More BBQ, more wading at the beach, and sitting and chatting for hours. That's what cottage times are for.

Monday: No Starbucks (but I really wanted a frappucino), some waking up, and some beach time in the sunshine instead of at sunset for once -- much more enjoyable. For me anyway. Vinny was not impressed that the waves came to play in the sun too. Then some pesto pasta from Ben, some cleaning, and we all hit the road. Groceries, returning the rental car, and now sitting at home.

Miscellany:
  • I didn't check work email once after leaving the office on Friday until a couple hours ago. Go work-home separation!
  • Thank (deity of your choice) that the heat broke earlier this week, otherwise it would have been completely unbearable in my parents' non-air-conditioned house.
  • Shopie is Vinny's idea of a perfect dog. Calm, very tentative, quiet, small, and incredibly cute.
  • 18-month olds have cute sayings. [livejournal.com profile] zach2005 says "Seeya!" to everything. Tori says "'Allo!" and "Dopie!" in reference to Shopie. Shopenhauer (sp?), in case you're curious.
  • My ReformAllianceConservative-voting global-warming-doubting libertarian father has a copy of Michael Ignatieff's book on ethnic war crimes. Know Thine Enemy is probably his idea.
  • Taking much of tomorrow off. Probably can't get away with the whole day, but certainly half the day. And sushi for lunch!

Now back to lounging. Hope everyone's having a fun August 7th.

I think Schopenhauer is the correct spelling of the philosopher in question.

Although how good can he be, if Monty Python didn't even mention him in the Drinking Song?

We may have driven 20 km for Starbucks, but at least we had our drinks in-store, looking down our snouts at everyone in the drive-thru, sitting in their SUVs.
