Trip Planning

Every couple years,
leapfish and I decide that driving several thousand kilometres over a short period of time makes sense. During the trip we always have second thoughts, but beforehand it always makes sense. And here we go again!

We're visiting Vermont for my cousin's wedding, then Fredericton to see
simplisticton,
purplemartini, and
zach2005, et l'environs to see leapfish's Mom. Then on to our family's cottage in PEI, and more hanging out with B&J&Z. A huge drive to Montréal where we can hopefully see Marie-Noëlle, Glenda, David2,
quebec_city_boy,
jdhorner, and
senhor (or at least some subset, since it'll be only a few hours of time in the city). Finally a quick jaunt into Ottawa for either a couple hours or a night (if
leapfish can get the time off work) to see
deah, Meag, Tym,
skaughty,
jpman, Elyse, Justin, Dave,
primary_suspect,
iambic_cub, my aunt Noma, and my brother Tim! Again, probably just a subset. Then we drive home. MapPoint 2004 says it's 3947 km. Though MapPoint 2004 still things the TransCanada goes between the malls in Fredericton, so it can't really be trusted that much.
The following maps are all on the same scale, and you can track where we're going by the little numbers in yellow boxes. Some are actual destinations, but most are just there to force MapPoint to choose the highways I want. Some people use mapping software to find out where to drive. I use it to display where I will be driving. :)

Day One: Kitchener (1) to Warren, Vermont (2). 8.5 hours, 851 km. Way faster to take the 401 than the piddly American back roads. We'll actually drive right through downtown Montréal, but right out again. We'll arrive after 10pm on the day before the wedding, but we might be too tired to track down the parties. Might. We're staying for two nights at Sugar Lodge, rather than where the wedding is being held (Inn at Round Barn Farm), mostly so that we can show up late the first night and not wake up the proprieters!

Day Two: (actually day three, but the second day of driving) Warren, Vermont (2) through (3) and (4) to Scotch Lake, New Brunswick (5). 8.5 hours, 726 km. Now we embrace the piddly American backroads! This is where MapPoint was very helpful, actually. We're cutting across Vermonth, New Hampshire, and Maine to get to New Brunswick, but I don't know that route at all (though I've done it at least once with my parents at age 7 or so). Very picturesque area though, so I think it will be awesome. Three nights at leapfish's Mom's house in Scotch Lake outside Fredericton (or maybe two with a hotel one night in town or something). We'll miss out, as we always seem to, on the Fredericton Market, which of course doesn't compare to Kitchener in many ways but has one major advantage: Samosas! I'm hoping that a subtle hint at the end of this paragraph will lead B&J to save some for us. Here's the hint: Hey! Save some samosas for us!

Day Three: (actually day six, but the third day of driving) Scotch Lake, New Brunswick (5) through (6) to Cascumpec, Prince Edward Island (7). 5 hours, 420 km? Ha! MapPoint has no idea. Jackie, remember not fighting about who got to drive from Fredericton to Moncton? :-) Three nights at the cottage on Mill River, with maybe a trip to Sandspit, a trip to Tignish, gotta visit the windmills at North Cape, plus some time in Charlottetown for
leapfish to get his beer bottle refilled (or maybe replaced instead, since this one's full of pennies).

Day Four: (actually day nine, but the fourth day of driving) Cascumpec, PEI (7) through (8) (hidden behind 6) and (9) and (10) to Montréal (11). 14 hours, 1200 km. We'll see how that one goes. Once we're back on the TransCanada we'll be able to make up time, even in Québec where I'm well trained to fear la Sûreté du Québec, or the QPP as we Upper Canadians call them. Why fear? Because obviously the Québec police hate Ontario drivers, right? Luckily, as long as I stay about 15km/h slower than the typical Québec drivers (that is, 125 km/h for me, 140+ km/h for them) I'm golden. A fairly late arrival, but at least we don't have to hit the road quite as early the next day. Maybe Cora's on the Sunday morning, anyone?

Day Five: (actually day ten, but fifth day of driving) Montréal (11) to Ottawa (12). 2 hours and 200 km. Try to drop in on the city we really haven't seen since we got married two years ago, never for more than a couple hours it seemed. Of course, ditto this time. No huge goals for the Ottawa trip, just want to try to see people and say hello. If I can drop in on Norma and Jean I'll be happy, as I see them almost never. Luckily, my friends I see a bit more often than never (though certainly not enough!).
Day Six: Ottawa (12) through (13) to Kitchener (14). 5.5 hours and 550 km. Wooo! As mentioned, this may end up being merged into day five, with just a 4 hour stopover in Ottawa.
What an exciting trip this will be! Jesus, I'm already exhausted just from typing out a description. The plan (and we all know how plans go) is to bring the digital camera and battery charger and take lots of fun pictures, since it'll be nice and warm and sunny (that's a hint for you, gods of weather) rather than below-zero like our last huge trip.
Time for groceries!
