It's census day in Canada. That means that you need to fill out that form you got in the mail, and send it in. Why?
  • It's important to know where Canadians live, so that services can be provided to everyone.
  • It's important to know what Canadians do, so that we know what our country looks like.
  • It's illegal to not fill in the form.*
...plus many other reasons. You can do the census online, or on paper. If you don't have a form, or have any questions at all, contact Statistics Canada now.

* Yes, that's reasonable. You register your car. You pay GST. Filling in the census has far more impact on you and your community than either of those things.

I don't see what everyone's beef with it is. Yeah you don't like the company they hired for the on-line part? Mail it in! It comes with a postage paid envelope.

I filled ours out the day we got it and it literally took 2 minutes.

What's Zach's language? English? French? None?

What exactly are the consequences of not filling out the form?

Mine's already in the mail, but I'm thinking, say, a person was an escaped convict who, obviously, didn't want the government to know where he or she was and refused to fill out the form. When this person was eventually apprehended, what kind of consequences could this person expect - a fine, a longer stay in prison, a long trip on a donkey with a pregnant virgin bride?

English. He won't be raised French first, and you're both English.

Good question! I know that if you don't fill out the form they call you, and then they visit you, basically bugging you until you fill it out. But I don't know what happens (a) if they get three people for four person household, or (b) if they discover you didn't do it. I suspect it's a fine, not jail time.

Yeah, that was what we eventually answered, tho I was tempted to answer "Baby".

all 23 canadians live in toronto, in a single maple sugar factory, and play hockey during their lunch breaks, where they eat poutine.

there. census done.

If only it were so easy! Being from away as Maritimers say, you missed out on Jean-Guy from Abitibi-Temiscamingue, and Earl with the 47 rifles in Red Deer.

But your accuracy rate is up there with StatsCan's, I'm sure.

They talked about that on the radio this morning. $1000 fine.

On the web form you can select multiple entries so I put both English and French for Seb since he both will be he "first" language as he is simul-learning. ;-)

You'd think they'd poll Canadians living outside of Canada; that's probably too expensive though.

They do, actually! Just call the Canadian consulate in Seattle and they'll give you a form.

Actually, I followed up a bit on this (though, not as far as actually going to the consulate) and they don't seem to care about non-residents. That instruction was only for residents who happened to be out of the country this month.

Though, in the end, Rob's wife counted me on their form as a "person who does not normally reside in this household" even though it seems that I shouldn't have been counted at all.
