I've decided that I like audience participation. So everybody stand up, stretch, and get ready to tell a short story to distract me.

Tell me about a time you moved to a new city/town/village/hamlet.

If you've never moved to a new city, tell me about your city/town/village/hamlet. Why are you there?

I myself have lived in many different cities, and have memories of almost all of them. Going backwards:

  • Halifax: moved here because Vinny had a job and I didn't. Spent most of my first six months here very bitter about that, since I had earned my Computer Science degree during the boom times. I've mostly gotten over that. Except for the freaky weather, I am beginning to care about this city... that's when you know it's serious. When Vinny talks about suddenly moving somewhere, part of me says "ack!"
  • Sydney River: doesn't count, cause my parents lived there without me, but I did visit for Giftmas each year. Not a nice place, though as nice as it can be given the circumstances. (high unemployment, low education, etc)
  • Fredericton: moved there to go to university, spent most of five years there. I worked five co-op terms, one in the city, the rest in Ottawa. Nice city, like a mini-Ottawa. Not a lot to do there. Got stopped for attempted jaywalking once.
  • Ottawa: moved there with my mom and brother when I was ten -- my parents separated for a short while, so that's where we ended up. Dad joined us less than a year later. Nice city, I fondly call it home. Even though I spent only eight and a half years there consecutively. Awfully cold in the winter, and awfully hot in the summer. But I really do miss it.
  • Victoria: Moved there when I was three... my parents packed me up in a motorhome, and took a shortcut to Victoria -- through California! I went to Disneyland, but don't remember it at all. Clearly a rip-off. :)
  • Thunder Bay: no memory of the city in which I was born. My parents tell me I used to go out playing in the tall grass in our yard so they couldn't see me, but I wouldn't yell when they called, only quietly babble. So they put a cow bell on me so they could find me. Oh, the trauma.

Did they let you out of the mobile home for Disneyworld?

Remind me to tell you sometime what my parents did to make sure that I didn't wander out of the backyard when I was two. There is no way I'm sharing that level of embarassment on the internet.

Reply, but instead of putting an "S" at the end, choose a different letter. Then your anonymity is assured.

I've just recently, and officially, moved to Fredericton. (I say officially because I now have a New Brunswick driver's liscence, and they ain't pretty.) Its a nice little university/government town. The club to pub ratio is exceedingly high for my taste, but you have to give the 17 year olds something to do don't ya? I like it here in all honestly, its quite a big city, well in comparison to Cape Breton towns anyways. Its nice and picturesque in the summer time.

I did move, for one summer to Smiths Falls, Ontario to work. I thought it was going to be a big exciting time, going into the city everyother day to drink and see the sights. Nope. The initial drive to my sisters house was quite troubling because not only did it take 1 hour on the high way, I think we did a mini tour through Kansas on the way. Only then did I realise, that I was living in the sticks again. Damnit. I went there for a taste of the big city life, but got Ontario small town life. C'est la vie.
