At the bottom of the screen, you'll see in small print "Gmail view:" and you can select one of the following:

-standard with chat
-standard without chat
-basic html

Pick the second one.

Actually it might be a per-server thing. At home last night it wasn't there, this morning it was and not at work its not available again so they must be slowly upgrading servers and I got lucky once.

I actually like it quite a bit, nice interface out of the way, and I don't need to install the gchat client everywhere.

Makes sense, really. I predict blogs will follow. Email, chats, blogs, are all basically the same thing on a different scale of interactivity.
