Remember my new Russian friend? Looks like his friends have all started visiting me too. Result? 76 comments in my journal with 50% in Russian, mostly online Russian slang that doesn't translate easily. Crazy! Fascinating though. I wish I could follow the conversation -- even though I suspect a significant chunk is not terribly flattering.

I am told that no ill will is meant, and since communication is so tricky anyway I'm hardly able to challenge it. Apparently, that logo at left means "Attention! There are fags in the comments!" Which is reasonable, since it's my journal.

I get the feeling that he's about 13. When we were in Iceland a younger boy came up to me, apparently inspired by the Canadian flag on my backpack, and tried to practice his English by talking to me about hockey, and teaching me to say dirty things in Icelandic. The whole thing came across as a bit rude, but I think something was lost in the translation.* I’d have one of the Russians I work with translate the slang...but they’re all a tad bit wacky themselves. In an endearing way, of course.

*Fun fact: Icelandic has no word for "please". I feel badly for Japaneese-Icelandic translators. :-).

Iceland was surprisingly devoid of hot Icelandic men. We saw *one* at a pool. I think he’s the guy they put on all of the country’s marketing material.
