At [livejournal.com profile] leapfish's request, I rented, and we watched, Monster-in-Law.

Some movies are so bad they need their own scale. I, in consultation with [livejournal.com profile] leapfish, have created a new five-point scale. This scale spans the distance between what is commonly known as "no stars" and "one star."

My scale ranges from SpiceWorld, at the high end, and anything starring Chris Farley and David Spade on the low end.

I give Monster-in-Law two Spice Girls out of five.

For reference, on this scale American Beauty would receive 302 Spice Girls.

Spice World was a great movie - I enjoyed that film more than I would normally publically admit, however it was enjoyable!

forgot to add.. I'm a Hilary Duff fan so I don't know if that is much of an indicator.

Hmmm, I think I saw that on the plane back from Beijing this week, but honestly - god bless Ambien - it's a blurry blur at best. When I get to that part in my camera I'll have to see if there's any photographic evidence.

I have to know what Adventures in Babysitting would get on this scale. I can only compare movie quality relative to this film.

And if you haven't seen that (which, omg, if you haven't, what rock were you living under during the 80s?), I will accept ratings for Mr. Mom and Tootsie.

;)

I suspect that Entertainment Tonight may actually use this scale...

no need to feel bad about Spice World. I'd watch it any day over pretentious dwaddle like American Beauty. :-)

for me to make a proper comparison...worse or better (as if it's possible) than "Showgirls"?

Oh, Tootsie is outside the normal range of the Spice Girls scale, it would get something like 13 Spice Girls.

I liked Spice World about three times as much as Vinny did, actually. I think he'd give it no stars at all, while I give it one (or maybe even two, if I'm feeling generous and forgetful).

Ah, now we get into the quantum mechanics and imaginary number theory. You first have to decide whether a movie can only be good or bad, or if it can be "so bad it's good."

In the first case, Showgirls is bad, and would get about 4 Spice Girls (still better than Monster-in-Law. In the second case, where Showgirls is so bad that it's good, it gets more like 12 or 13 Spice Girls (~2 stars).

It's important to note that the scale is not reverse-logarithmic, meaning it takes more and more Spice Girls to reach the next level of quality each time.

Saying "Showgirls is slightly better, if you're in the mood" is too boring.

oh I know, but I didn't want to go on a rant about "American beauty" that would have made buddy realize how misguided he is.

I'm just giving in that way. :-P

I saw The Fog the other day, and I'd give it a Spice Girl or two. I mean, I was looking for a cheap horror flick with some spiffy effects, but this was a lot more cheap than I thought.
