Cairo, NT, 2000, 2003, Vista, Longhorn

With the news that Monad* has been pulled from Windows Vista**, I draw your attention to this hilarious*** article from October of 1996, in which the demise of Cairo**** is spun.

My favourite bit: "the release of Windows NT 5.0 in the second half of 1997" --> this became Windows 2000

* The new Microsoft Bash™ clone meant to replace the old DOS-style command shell. Recently implicated in future Windows vulnerabilities, and therefore pulled. Judge not, lest ye be judged.

** The next release of Windows for personal / workstation use, i.e. Windows XP 2.

*** To me.

**** Originally meant to be Windows NT 4.0, then 5.0, then a long list of new technologies and features that would gradually be integrated into Windows over the years. Some of the biggest ones are still not ready for beta, while others are now five years old. Remember what I said about judging. Could you program Windows? (no you couldn't, [livejournal.com profile] simplisticton.)

It's easier to release stuff on time when a) you're using a UNIX base, and (b) your profit margin on your hardware is so sky high.
