Things I liked about Canada Day 2005:
- We got the kitchen ceiling painted a couple times. Still needs sanding and another coat or two, but it's progress.
- We went to Matter Of Taste for coffee (Vinny) and a smoothie (me).
- I did an inventory of all the boxes that IKEA sent, and it appears that only one thing is missing. A glass door, in case you're wondering.
Added: - Watching Love Actually with my husband. Still makes me cry.

Things that I didn't like about Canada Day 2005:
- not being in Ottawa. I've been in Ottawa for the vast majority of my Canada Days, and they never feel right without 200,000+ people around me in red and white, all celebrating the things that make Canada great. I've whined about this before.
- Missing the fireworks here in KW. My own fault, if I really wanted to go I should have said something. But now I wish we had gone. We're never going to like this place if we don't start actually living here.
- Action Cat thought it would be cool to pee on the pillow that we gave them as a bed.

My Canada Day Annoyance:
The Canadian flag is precisely twice as wide as it is tall. Not almost. Not like the US flag. Not a square. Not a circle. It bothers me tremendously (and somewhat inexplicably) to see people who are proudly patriotic sporting things that are simply not our flag. I'm not whining about maple leaf temporary tattoos or whathaveyou, I mean things that are pretending to be the flag. Come on, it's not that hard.

How to make a Canadian flag:
Take a white square, and a red sqaure. Cut the red square in half, and put one half on each side of the white square. Then draw an eleven-point maple leaf in the centre of the square, with the maple leaf being almost full height inside the square. That's it. I admit that drawing a maple leaf is tricky, but I see so many problematic squares!

(Do I care if a six-year-old draws the flag incorrectly? No. Do I care if the major newspaper in our capital city includes a full-page flag to cut out and tape in your window ("Show your patriotism!") that is incorrectly proportioned? A little smidgen.)

*sigh* I need a hobby. And don't suggest washing pillows that smell like pee.

There are more cheap fireworks if you look at the park through the windows on your left.

Let's watch a movie! I'd even let you pick...Star Trek (blech).

Maybe not Star Trek, but definitely one of your action-ey movies. Come on...

Out of my many many boyfriends and husbands, you're the best one for watching Love Actually with. Thanks! :) xoxo

At first I thought that your gripe with incorrect flag representations was frivolous, I'll admit...but after seeing so many totally incorrect renditions of the Canadian flag floating about, I now agree with you 100%. A slim stripe of red on either side of a distorted maple leaf does not a Canadian flag make. I mean, what if there were U.S. flags with 14 stripes (instead of 13)? Uh-uh!

Exactly! It's just respect.

Dear Mr. President. There are too many states. Please eliminate three.

"Grandpa, there are only 49 stars on that flag."

"I'll be deep in the cold, cold ground before I rek'nize Mizzourah."

Equally disturbing is the wearing to the Canadian flag as a cape.. I wanted to bludgeon sooo many people flag/cape wearers on the streets of Ottawa yesterday!! Next year, I might start issuing fines to such offenders citing loss of national dignity. :)

It sounds like it's high time that the cats started wearing diapers. And barf bags.
