...when really, citizens of both countries win.

Spain passes equal marriage bill. According to CBC, this makes them fourth, but my understanding from this other story is that the bill is basically law almost immediately, meaning they're technically third. I'm not familiar with the final law-creation procedures in Spain though.

As iambic_cub pointed out, it's not a contest.

but really we won cause the court cases gave 90% of Canadians equal marriage rights before Spain got them so nyah nyah

i find that very interesting because when i was in spain i hung out with a homo, who was from denmark, and he said that the culture in spain is probably one of the least accepting (as far as homosexuality goes) out of all the european countries.

Wikipedia is great, but you can't always trust it. It's written by anybody, so (for example) I could go change it to say fourth, since Canada was most of the way there. It's not true, but it would still look official. :)

Eh, will just call it a tie. :) Still, it's amazing that the number of nations allowing same-sex marriage has doubled in such a short amount of time.

You could also claim that since the House of Commons voted on it before the Spanish parliament, and the Senate vote and Royal Assent are practically just procedural issues, we were first. Then again, we've had this on our plate for two years. The Spanish parliament pretty much took up this cause as soon as this government was elected and stuck through with it. Perhaps they deserve the credit for not sitting around indecisively for ages mulling over it.

Also, if you check the discussion page (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Same-sex_marriage_in_Spain), there is a reference to a Toronto Star article (http://www.thestar.com/NASApp/cs/ContentServer?pagename=thestar/Layout/Article_Type1&c=Article&cid=1120126728647&call_pageid=968332188492&col=968705899037&t=TS_Home) (which is currently inaccessible due to website problems) which states that the legislation in Spain doesn't become law until it is published in Spain's official journal - expected to be done 15 days from now.

Sitting around indecisively? That's not what Toew's and most other opponents, this legislation has been rushed. I mean, there's like 29,500,000 people who haven't had the chance to address any of the parliamentary committees yet.

Your forgetting the thousands of yet to be adopted foreign and unborn children who might have to suffer within the folds of a same-sex family. Don't forget their right to a normal heterosexual existance.

True. I know that I'd rather see children wandering the streets in Beijing, than end up in North America with the gays. It's a no-brainer.

I was at a conference the past few days on international gay and lesbian rights, and there was a presentation by a Spanish activist who was a big force behind the legislation. Someone asked the question how this could happen in such a conservative country. My summary of the answer:

(1) Spanish guys are hot.
(2) But they have thick accents.
(3) So I didn't really understand the answer.
(4) See (1).
