Celeberrific
Feb. 7th, 2008 09:24 pmApparently today was celebrity day at Ottawa's MacDonald-Cartier International Airport (YOW). I got to see (but not meet or otherwise pester):
Jack Layton: leader of the federal NDP. Nice guy, former Toronto city councillor. May not have the smartest ideas about Canada's role in Afghanistan, but I'm no smarter so it's hard to say. Cares more about transit, the environment, and Canada's social safety net than the prime minister, that much is certain. Update: Vincent reminds me that he's our MP as well. That would certainly be relevant to this post. :)
Olivia Chow: Jack's wife, and fellow NDP MP. Also a former Toronto city councillor. I don't know much else about her, actually.
Thomas Mulcair (maybe): not sure if it was him, but he was in line with Jack and Olivia. He's the first NDP MP in Quebec in a long time, and a former Quebec cabinet minister. Smart and a huge win for the NDP.
John Hamm: former Progressive Conservative premier of Nova Scotia.
Mystery guyRussell MacLellan: darned if I can't remember who this guy was, but he was a premier, either PC or Liberal, in Nova Scotia I'm almost certain. Before John Hamm. I'm on an airplane otherwise I'd surf Wikipedia until I figured it out. Yes, former Liberal premier of Nova Scotia Russell MacLellan! Having drinks in a bar with also-but-slightly-less-former premier Hamm! It's crazy.
Preston Manning: founder and leader of the Reform Party of Canada. Was fed up with the excesses of the Progressive Conservatives, and started what eventually led to the merger of the PCs and the Canadian Alliance under the Conservative Party of Canada banner. Was never trusted by much of Canada, so his electoral successes were limited to the West.
I was kinda hoping for more, but then I had to board my plane. Oh well, maybe next time. I'll take Ottawa celebrities over Hollywood any time.
I guess this means that I'm a giant geek.
