Belinda Stronach has crossed the floor, and is now a Liberal cabinet minister. This means the known votes on the budget are Liberal+NDP = 151, Conservative+Bloc = 152. With three independent MPs, at least one whom will be voting with the government, things are getting mighty interesting.

As someone on the Egale mailing list said today, it's as if we're all watching a Hollywood movie about a minority government, where the producers are trying to spice it up with all sorts of ridiculously unlikely plot twists.

Tangent 1: Scott Brison and Belinda Stronach will both be running for the *Liberal* leadership pretty soon. They might also be back to the private sector a lot sooner than they expected.

Tangent 2: Maybe Lucienne Robillard will finally climb out of her cave and actually start responding to Parti Quebecois propaganda.

What's going on with the Conservatives? Right after the merger, Joe Clark bailed. Then Scott Brison. Now Belinda. It seems that anyone middle-of-the-road in the party leaves. Just how scary are things behind the scenes in the Conservative Party.

Remember, the Alliance merged with the Conservatives, and I guess the "real" conservatives saw how crazy the alliance people were and all bailed so all we are left with is the old Alliance party with a different name.

It's easy. The Conservatives are now the Alliance (no surprise there.) The Liberals are now the PCs. The NDP are basically the pre-1993 Liberals. Paul Martin is Joe Clark, Scott Brison is Paul Martin, Stephen Harper is Stockwell Day, Belinda Stronach is Meg Ryan, and Jack Layton is that guy from the computer training CD infomercials.

So best case scenario is that budget gets voted in and conservatives fail in attempts to stall parliament day after day trying to get miss Clarkson (no, not Kelly) to dissolve Parliament, and then Belinda becomes the next Prime Minister after the marriage legislation squeaks in... That would make me warm and fuzzy inside.

The Liberals have loooong memories. Maybe not Team Martin, but the Liberals in general too. People that have fought for the Liberals for 30-odd years will not let Stronach end up as leader, not until she's proven that she really is sticking around. Hell, even Brison has ten years or so before he gets a shot, unless there's a blowout or something (a la Jean Charest, 1993).

But it's nice to see the parties becoming more like themselves again. :)

Yeah, I tend to be a little too optimistic when it comes to politics. It would just be nice to see a prime minister in my lifetime who doesn't look like (s)he's plagued with the gout.
