IKEA = fun.
IKEA Kitchen Planner (for Windows, sorry) = more fun.

Our current kitchen wall colour, but with our planned new cabinetry on top.

Grey walls, with our planned new cabinetry on top.

Design contest! Help us pick a new colour for the kitchen!
Take one of the pics above and modify the wall colours and floor colour if you're so inclined. The winner gets a lollipop and the satisfaction of knowing they control our every design decision.

Our planned kitchen in IKEA Kitchen Planner format, in case you're playing with the IKEA Kitchen Planner.

I used something similar when I did my remodel... except I found that, strangely, EVERY color worked. :-P

Something weird, I guess.

I quite like the red. As for the cabinets (which are probably already determined anyway), I'd advise against splitting that one lower one with drawers and a cupboard. Instead I suggest two really wide and deep drawers with four smaller ones one top. The wide, deep drawers are *so* useful for pots and pans.

but, but ...

How on earth can I help design when I

A) Don't know how the other rooms are painted
B) Have no idea how much light gets in
C) and haven't seen your wardrobes to see what colours you like!

I feel like a man with a big task, but no tools!

A) there's little exposed colour to this room. The "camera" in these images is in the large windows.
B) TONS of natural light. "Camera" is pointed northeast in these images.
C) The only solution is to visit. Hop to it!

A big task, eh? Is that what the kids are calling it these days?

Agreed. We actually will have some different cupboards, the software is kinda limited. Nothing is certain, of that I am certain. :-)

"The power of Oprah compels you! The power of Oprah COMPELS YOU!"

It's hard to say from the software, as it represents everything so low-res. The natural oak of the cabinets may not go well with certain colours, but damned if I know which ones!

Well, as a joke, my mom and I decided to go through the software and find the ugliest colors and patterns to decorate his room.

Except, when we put it all together, it looked good. We tried again. Same result.

I think you have to go into it knowing which colors you like, and then compare different combinations to see which you like best.

Altho, for doing the remodel, the program was GREAT, because I could do measurements and such, and for rearranging furniture, it's wonderful, too - I was able to see exactly what my house would look like before I finished. And, when contractors tried to argue with me about this or that, I knew what would fit, what would work, and what wouldn't. Drove them crazy, but when it was done, even they had to compliment the design they never thought would work.

Yes yes - I am also partial to the warmer colors. And red can be wonderful if done right.

Never be afraid of color!

I *love* strong, vibrant colours. But I always want a colour that's more than what Vinny wants, or diametrically opposed to the colour that he wants. :)

Sometimes you just gotta do it, tho.

Everyone HATED the colors for my dining room when they saw the paint in the can, but once it was on the wall, everyone was like, "OH MY GOD!" (in a good way)

You should do a While You Were Out or Trading Spaces or I Had An American LJer In My House or something... :-D

I REALLY wish there were an Ikea closer to here. (The nearest one is 6 hours away in Minneapolis.)

We would go bonkers if IKEA were that far away. Well, to be fair, it was further away when we lived in Halifax, but we visited my family in Ottawa often enough that we got our fix. (This past weekend's visit to Ottawa was the first time in five years that I've visited the city but not visited the IKEA)

Now it's only 45 minutes away. w00t!

We're getting an IKEA in August.

We're getting a new kitchen in January.

I've already picked out the cabinet style. From a 2002 catalogue I got when I was at IKEA with [livejournal.com profile] philarich74.

I have GOT to download this software...

On a related note: Tokyo is getting an IKEA soon. I had some friends visit me fom Japan this summer, and after going to IKEA in Ottawa, they're going to be the first people in line when it opens in Tokyo. It really is a form of crack, isn't it?
