London landline telephone numbers start with 0207 or 0208. The traditional seven-digit number then follows. Think of 0207 as zero plus the area code. think of the zero as meaning 'locally.' Mobile phones use a code like 0774 or 0775, depending on the mobile provider.

When you are within the UK, you include the leading zero. Calling from or two the outside of the UK, you replace the zero, which means 'local', with the country code you're calling to/from. So if you're calling me, you'd replace 0774 with 44774.

The only extra bit you need from North America is the over-seas prefix, 011, which tells your telephone provider that you're dialing abroad. So with my number being 0774, you'd dial 011 44 774, plus the remaining seven-digit telephone number - same as in North America.

Uh-oh, bad service sucks. I know it's not true, but I wanted Jamie Oliver to serve us (*ahem*, service us, *ahem*) himself. :)

Still slightly confused on the dialling, though everything you and dipdewdog said makes sense. It's just the lack of familiar, that's all. I'm not in my element.
