Warning: (Mostly) political post.

Nicholas Lemann, author of The Promised Land, an examination of race politics in the US which I have not read, has a theory on people. Basically, the theory is that there are three types of people: Lifers, Talents, and Mandarins.

Lemann's description of these types, using the candidates for US President in 1996:

Maclean's columnist Paul Wells' description of these types (shorter, funnier, Canadian):

Sidenote: Paul Wells is a very enjoyable read, both in column- and blog-forms. And he hates Paul Martin. It's a hoot.

Anyway, if you want to, there's an online test which tells you which type you probably are. Enjoy!

...apparently,

I'm a Talent!

You're a risk-taker, and you follow your passions. You're determined to take on the world and succeed on your own terms. Whether in the arts, science, engineering, business, or politics, you fearlessly express your own vision of the world. You're not afraid of a fight, and you're not afraid to bet your future on your own abilities. If you find a job boring or stifling, you're already preparing your resume. You believe in doing what you love, and you're not willing to settle for an ordinary life.
