I'd just like to point out, apropos of nothing, that our new bed (below), is called HOPEN.

I think it's funny no matter which way you pronounce it.

ooo me likey. I like that one and Malm. question on it....is the part under the mattress a flat wood piece? like, do you not need a box spring with that? or do their pictures just not include it?

Underneath the mattress you will find 24 wooden slats, so it's almost the same as solid wood, but with more air flow. Under that, you'll find a strong metal bar (which Vin dropped on Action Cat) and some weird weak metal arms, in an asterisk-shaped arrangement. It's interesting, anyway.

Short answer: the bed is designed so that you don't need a boxspring.

Just be sure no to be 'hopen' on it too vigorously, otherwise you may accidentally break a few of those wooden slats. :P Just consider yourself lucky that the support beam is now made out of metal instead of laminated lumber! (as they used to be)

Our previous frame, from Sears, was all fibreboard, and had *one* slat under the boxspring. It malfunctioned six ways from Sunday.
