c9BURNING MAN 2002 TRIP REPORT - DAY ZERO
"Watch your head Elyse!"
Hello to one and all from Black Rock City!!
We have arrived, safe and sound, at the Black Rock Desert in Nevada. The drive took us a bit longer than expected, but the costs weren't huge and the fun quotient was high. We're using the available wireless internet access as we drive in towards our camp, but we don't have power while we're there, so don't expect much more until September 2nd as we leave!
Best happening so far: we were driving down a dangerous twisty highway, and people would occasionally pass the big, slow, motorhome. One car tailgated us for a few minutes, so we prepared to stop at an upcoming turnout to let them pass. Before we reached it, they started to pass us, pulled alongside, and yelled for us to stop -- we realized that they too were going to Burning Man! We stopped, and they jumped out of their SUV and ran to us, hugged us, and gave us Burning Man gifts! We told them it was our first time, and they told us it was going to be so amazing -- it was a wonderful way to be introduced to the non-commercial non-cynical non-judgemental event, and left us smiling the rest of the day.
All our love to everyone, and expect some bigger trip reports once I'm not navigating an RV up and down mountains quite so much! :-)

(don't know what Burning Man is? In short, it's a huge festival of arts and self-expression held annually in the Nevada desert. People decorate their cars, they build huge art installations, they dress up in funny costumes and dance around, and Saturday night we set fire to a 40-foot-tall stick man filled with fireworks as a celebration of all things good.
