CBC's Mike Holmes On Homes

I am watching the awesomest version of Holmes on Homes ever.

Wendy Mesley is doing a report with Mike Holmes' help. It's basically "here are a some people who got screwed by a bad contractor", the standard Holmes on Homes setup. Then they do it five more times. Then they refer to a dozen other cases.

The best part? Unlike on Holmes on Homes, they name names! Bad contractors in Toronto are getting their asses handed to them and their faces on national TV. Nice.

I betcha Mr. Holmes is lovin every minute of it. Every episode of Holmes on Homes I watched it looks like he wants to just spit out the name of the contractor at the height of his frustration.

He airs on Discovery Home here in US, and his show is awesome. Having gone through the nightmare of home renovation with a drug-addicted contractor, I'm glad he's out there doing this.

When I was in the UK I watched a much more direct show called (IIRC) "Named and Shamed". They got lines on bad contractors and tradespeople and would either confront them or set up a "sting"-- a few hidden cameras and a job to do.

Watching a plumber stand and polish a pipe fitting with a rag for over an hour in the basement just to charge more money was... inspiring.

And then they NAMED NAMES, "Acme Plumbing Co. of 115 High Street, Ruralby, you have been NAMED and SHAMED!"

Great stuff.

The reason Holmes doesn't name names is because there's no point. It's so easy for these guys to turn around and start a new company -- which they do all the time anyway, to get away from everyone who wants to find them -- that by the time the show was on the air they'd be out with a new name scamming new people.

Even though it's pointless, it'd still be satisfying to see them name names. ;-)
