I like the idea of having my contacts, my email, my telephone, my music, all in one device, rather than having to carry four different devices with me. But at the same time, I hate "this device does everything and costs $800"-itis too.
I'm sure that I *do*. But honestly, I can't give myself permission to spend more than $50 CDN or so. So when your 3G reaches that price point, give me a call. :)
True, they are doing just fine making their own decisions. And everybody else, including Motorola, fuck it up when they try to "help." But I can't see any future other than convergence -- why should anybody buy an iPod in 2006, for example? Once everyone has one, Apple's toast.
Hmm...I'm trying to figure out how much value it currently holds for me v. how much I could sell it for on eBay v. if there is anything I could trade you for it.
I would have a lot fewer reservations about upgrading my iPod if they would just freaking add Ogg/Vorbis & Ogg/Theora support. I hate having to rip everything to FLAC then to MP3 (for the iPod). It would be so much easier (and take so much less space) if I could just do it once.
If I were going to give up all but one of my portable devices, I would keep the LifeDrive over the iPod. The LD plays music, video, games, does WiFi and Bluetooth and scheduling. The iPod does music*. Well... wow.
Don't get me wrong, the iPod is a beautful looking device with a great interface and nothing's been marketed better... but they're just not worth it.
*the iPod does not do scheduling in a meaningful way. Its timezone has been screwed up permanently since I first synced it with my Powerbook. Being reminded of meetings three hours after they happen isn't particularly useful. Nor is the fact that it's read only.
Well, I suppose there is that. But Apple still needs a new thing to market, not just "you battery died again? here's our 18th generation model, it can hold 87000 TB of music!"
Hey now! If I'm driving up to Vancouver next week I expect to have access to Creative Cam...or at the very least his slightly less popular cousin Kreative Kam...at dinner. :-).
