After all the hype, I was expecting at the very least that Google and Sun would announce joint ownership of the laws of physics, and an initial plan to provide free anti-gravity in every home, financed by floating AdWords. Also, chocolate milk drinking fountains.

Nothing of the sort, of course. Sun will offer the Google Toolbar as an option when people download the Java runtime, and Google will... well... they showed up and smiled on cue at the press conference. That seems to be their role at the moment. One look at a stock chart will explain to you why the press conference was held at all.

Two comments I liked, despite their complete lack of relevance. First, from The Register:
The problem, however, is that even Google freaks - the types who would be excited if the ad broker started conducting mandatory, aggressive anal probes under the Fistoogle brand - won't find much to cheer here.
and this comment on the Slashdot story
[X] Google Earth
[X] Google Moon
[X] Google Sun

I guess this means we live in a google universe.

It caused so much hype, though... just because it was Google. If anything, Sun dragged the rumour quotient down. Can you imagine what would happen if there was some Google/Apple rumour floating around?

a) nobody calls me mister except [livejournal.com profile] leapfish and [livejournal.com profile] fiver00. That caught me off guard. :)

b) quote as in link? I suppose I should link both then.

a) sorry. it's a habit of mine.

b) well, it just struck me as weird, considering that you're the one who upholds writing standards and accountability and such, and it just seemed weird for you not to say where you were getting your quotes from. ;-)

By no means was I arguing the point, nor complaining about the "mister" usage! I have since attributed. I think my approach was that since I had actually added to rather than excerpted from the slashdot comment, and sending people to the comment would not add context, I just lazily left it out.
