Too early

While I can't comment with quite the flair of [livejournal.com profile] nihilicious, I too am not happy about being up so early. I've bee up for over 40 minutes now, and it's not showing any signs of improvement. Time to hit the highway I guess.

What's scary is that last week, when I spent two days in Toronto, I was leaving at similar times ("too early") and the 401 was often FULL. This is a 16-lane highway, kids. People are sick.

Surreal

A fellow instructor just described "Eastern Canada" (meaning Atlantic Canada, rather than Ontario, as Albertans might think) as the place with "all the money," and as the home of the "fat cats."

He was only talking about within our company, which makes it still untrue but closer to possible. But still, a little weird to hear.

I'm teaching at the offices of a company that sells insurance, and is named after the city I'm in. They have pretty serious security here, with a stern 17-year-old security guard standing in the lobby checking all badges as people enter. Also, it's hard to get web access: I can't access regular web sites, as near as I can tell, but Gmail works. Might be another https thing like yesterday.

I went to the washroom, and that was very odd. Instead of urinals, they have stalls with no doors, and toilets with no seats on them. They have regular toilets too. Out of curiousity I used the handicapped accessible stall, and in there were two toilets, neither with seats!

I don't understand this place.

Ahh, the fun of internet proxy servers. I can visit any webpage that starts with https:// but no others. I can't view my livejournal friends list because that goes back to regular http:// (despite the availability of a secure login at https://www.livejournal.com). Grrrr.

It's actually kinda slick. Every time I try to pass through the wall, I'm prompted for authentication to see if I'm allowed.

Hmmm. Time to go steal a student's PC.
