You've got to be freakin' kidding me.

I wired the desktop directly to the DSL modem, and of course it worked fine. I wired the desktop directly to the router (as opposed to wirelessly), and the router to the modem, and the problem reappeared. I reset the router to factory defaults, and the problem persisted. But the kicker: the laptop STILL has no problem.

So I've switched the desktop from wireless to wired, I've freshly installed a new OS, I've tried it both unpatched and freshly Windows Updated, and the only thing that fixes it is the router. But the router causes the problem only on the desktop, not the laptop. And since Ive changed NICs (wireless to wired) it's not even a MAC address deal.

I repeat: you've got to be freakin' kidding me.

So the solution is: no consistent internet for the desktop. I don't know what else to do. There is a firmware update for the router, but the listed fixes are irrelevant. I'll still try it of course, but sheesh.
