Three things for voting day.

1. Vote!
Hardly any excuse for not voting is good enough beyond medical emergency, IMHO.

2. Rob Hyndman's very pretty blog reminds us that posting comments that reference results of the election before the polls have closed coast to coast is illegal in Canada. Andrew Coyne sneakily suggests reporting hypothetical results of an election featuring Fascists, Crooks, Commies, and Traitors. :)

3. The final predictions:

Oh My GOD.

A Fascist majority???
We're doomed.

[identity profile] c9.livejournal.com 2006-01-22 10:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Not one of the predictions is for a majority. You're safe.

But my, the fascists are awfully close on that Ipsos-Reid poll. When you're talking 1 to 2% of the voting population could make the difference between a minority and majority government, that's rather unnerving. I'm glad I voted how I did. It'd be really cool to see the NDP with twice as many seats though.

It'd be slighly amusing if ElectionPrediction.org's results came true -- then no one could form a government without the support of the Bloc. (Odd fact of the night: an old gay acquaintance of mine from Waterloo, Milton Chan, actually started up ElectionPrediction.org.)

I've really got to remember to change my riding before the next election to somewhere I can potentially make a difference. Why can't we just get proportional representation already?

BTW, thanks for all the posts on the different ridings; I thought the profiles well done and interesting.

It'll really be OK. Ipsos is a bit scary, but the support is so concentrated in the west even in 2006 that their seat count won't be that high. Normally it on;y takes an 8% lead to get a majority (historically), but even that 10% lead won't do it this time. Plus, Ontario is doing its normal panic-about-the-right-wing thing. Not as much as last time, but enough to kill the majority.

So Cam, the polls have been open for 2 minutes now, have you voted yet? ;-)

Jo's playgroup today is at the same building as the voting so she will do that when she is there. I however had to be at work before the polls opened this morning, and then after work we have a baby sign language class to attend, so I won't be able to vote until after 8:30pm tonight (yay for extended hours).

Yes, I was the third person through the door. :)

Does this part mean that I'm exempt from the rule?

Last point: CBC’s the Blog Report notes that U.S. bloggers might well decide to post Canadian election results early (and thanks to the CBC for pointing us there), and that the Elections Act doesn’t apply to websites or broadcasters outside of Canada. Few things could be more tedious at this point than embarking on a jurisdictional debate about the Act, but I will point to Section 331, patriotically titled “Non-interference by Foreigners”:

"No person who does not reside in Canada shall, during an election period, in any way induce electors to vote or refrain from voting or vote or refrain from voting for a particular candidate unless the person is

a) A Canadian Citizen

I dunno. The law is written without the Internet in mind, unfortunately. You live outside Canada, and would be transmitting information to a website that exists outside Canada. You're in the clear. I live inside Canada, so I'm not.

I think the part you quoted just means that Michael Moore and Bill O'Reilly should shut up.

[identity profile] cap-hill-latte.livejournal.com 2006-01-23 12:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I like the idea that, legally, I seem to have more power than them over the issue at the moment. I'm tempted to start a public-facing blog expressly for this purpose.

Oh, and I'll also use it to complain about interviewing because I don't think I did that loudly and publicly enough this morning.

[identity profile] c9.livejournal.com 2006-01-23 12:48 pm (UTC)(link)
There are already several websites devoted to both those purposes, actually. :)

interesting that election prediction seems closest. not dead on but close enough.... and thankfully with the lowest fascists seats ;)
