Words

1. I dislike how "ASAP" no longer means what it means. Or at least, it seems that way. I regularly edit my emails to remove usage of "ASAP" because it seems to indicate "do this right the fuck now," not "as soon as you can, I understand that you may be busy."

2. My new CEO mispronounces the folllowing words:
  • nuclear (Nuke-yalur)
  • COBOL (cobalt)
  • ManuLife (Manual-Life)
  • Acura (a-CURE-ah)
3. That is all.

1. My Indian clients use English in bizarre ways. "Please to be kindly sending..." and other very floral manners of constructing their sentences. They read like love letters sometimes. I think I'm engaged to someone in Mumbai, but I can't be sure.

2. My stepfather drove me crazy with his words:
  • dawn 'til dust (instead of dusk)
  • a fat person is also called obeast (instead of obese)
  • soder (instead of soda)
  • idear (instead of idea)
  • gordy (instead of doily)

My mother had a coworker who distorted words, too:
  • one was bedstricken (instead of bedridden)
  • she wanted ivory in her wedding bouquet (she meant ivy, thank goodness)
  • if you have a headache, take Tide-and-all (instead of Tylenol)

3. Always nice to read your posts. :-)

soder and idear are also pretty common in Boston... I can't tell you how many times I've heard it.

You can tell me. I promise not to tell anyone you told me.

This would have been fine if he weren't already annoying and we were actually from Boston.

My logic is that folks drop the letter "r" from some words and they feel the need to add that dropped letter elsewhere.

I'm guessing this isn't the case? :-/

yeah, and Maine too. My dad only says them that way. Pizzer and Soder

[identity profile] putaindemerde.livejournal.com 2006-06-01 10:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Ya know, I'm must be a weird Bostonian then, because I don't say "idear" or "soder" or "pizzer"

Hmmm... pizzer. Interesting.

haha, yeah. my dad was born in Maine and grew up in Mass, so it's sort of ingrained in him. I grew up in CT, so we speak correctly :) and even after living in boston for 7 years, I don't say any of those.

[identity profile] putaindemerde.livejournal.com 2006-06-01 10:31 pm (UTC)(link)
You live in Boston? And we've never met? ;-)

[identity profile] rostin79.livejournal.com 2006-06-01 10:33 pm (UTC)(link)
live-d :). I'm what I call "outside Seattle" now. But yeah, I lived there for 7 years. :) interestingly enough we have no boston LJ friends in common. I think that is a first in the history of the gay universe.

LOL! You know, it does happen de temps en temps...

What sent you away from our "beautiful" city and off to the opposite corner of the universe? A job, a fella, or both?

[identity profile] rostin79.livejournal.com 2006-06-02 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
none of the above. just wanted to try something new. and with that, i'm here :)

[identity profile] putaindemerde.livejournal.com 2006-06-02 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
Shame you wouldn't be here for Pride next weekend... I'd have found a way to ask you out for a drink or something.

*sigh* oh, well... ;-)

Having lived in Maine, I can totally vouch for the fact that Mainers pronounce "idear". I giggled the whole time I was there.

I believe that the pronounciation of a trailing 'a' sound isn't really a error in pronounciation so much as a characteristic of your stepfather's accent. It goes beyond the North-Eastern US too; as far as I can tell, it's a common feature of many local accents within the UK and Canada.

Ever since I heard GW Bush say "nuke-yalur" a while back, it's like fingernails on a chalkboard. Too bad nobody has corrected either of them yet (and CEO or not, I'd certainly be tempted). :-P

Is he from Texas? That would explain #1, and maybe 2 & 3. #4 is just bizarre.

[identity profile] c9.livejournal.com 2006-06-01 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
She, actually. And nope. :)

my mom says melk instead of milk and warsh instead of wash.

we make fun of her all the time.

Two questions:

1. In what context is your CEO required to use the word "nuclear". Nexient isn't planning any "hostile" takeovers of "small, well armed countries"...is it?

2. Isn't that how you pronounce Acura? Oh, never mind, I think I see how she's pronouncing it now. Hard "a"?

[identity profile] c9.livejournal.com 2006-06-02 09:41 am (UTC)(link)
1. She was giving a speech to an association of women in the nuclear industry yesterday.

2. I should have typed a-CURE-ah.
